It seemed like a cool idea at the time...

The other day a friend and I were discussing forgotten products that never really took off, like the Gibson tuning machines with little string winder cranks that folded out. Or Kahler tremolo bridges for basses. The triple-coil DiMarzio "Motherbucker". Some were pretty cool, like the Legend...

    Hartke Guitar Cabs?

I remember when they made those. I tried one, being an incorrigible gearhead and they sounded really tight, focused and punchy. They weren't really my cup of stout, but they had a cool sound nonetheless. Here's a really weird one, though. I got an old Marshall head in trade for a Fender Twin...

    Acoustic Beware : Micing Amp

Regarding increasing the low end with an open back amp: the reason closed-back cabinets produce more lows is because with an open-back you get the sound waves from the back of the speaker coming around and merging with the waves from the front which causes cancellation especially with the...

    How to play funk guitar

The guy in AWB was killer! Also, check out '70's Earth Wind and Fire, Chic (Nile Rodgers), Kool and the Gang (especially Funky Stuff 1 & 2 and Jungle Boogie), Parliament/Funkadelic (for the weirder stuff), and sometimes KC and the Sunshine Band. I think I remember most of those guys playing...

    Fender necks?

Lots of players (Blackmore, Malmsteen) shave their necks down to a "V" shape. Just be careful! And leave the scalloping to the pros unless you're really good.

    MIC THE AMPS?

My band started running the kick thru the PA at rehearsal (it gets a little loud in there with 2 Rectos and an SVT!) and we noticed that everyone is locking in with the drums a lot better now. If you feel you need to run yer amp really loud at rehearsal to get "that tone" try turning it towards...

scales and modes for blues? (SRV style)

I switched to heavier strings about a year ago and it was hell at first. The set I changed to are the Dean Markely "Jazz" which are: 12/15/26(wound)/34/44/54 which I'm pretty sure is still not as heavy as what SRV was using (unless he was de-tuning). It really makes the tone a lot better...

    EBow - Anyone use it . . . tried it ?

Yah, Window...there's some weird player credits out there. The amazing Pino Palladino played bass on the solo album by the singer from Haircut 100. Or Thomas Dolby on Foreigner's "Urgent". Will and Anton from Late Night on Ace Frehley's solo album (remember "New York Groove"?) Trevor Horn...

    Fucking Patch Cables!!!

Thanks, RE! Buyers beware! Canare Cable comes in different colors which denote DIFFERENT CABLE!! They're not that way to make yer studio prettier.

    Clarence White

Is he the guy that the Parsons/White string bender is named for? I'm pretty sure the Parsons refers to Gene Parsons. (Isn't he related to Gram?) and wasn't Gene Parsons in the Byrds for a while (Sweetheart of the Rodeo era)? Someone with Byrds knowledge chime in here!

    Don't Forget Nashville Tuning!!!

Here's a sometimes useful technique for stringing acoustic guitars. I'm sure most of you probably know about this but for those who don't I'll explain: Whenever I'm doubling acoustic guitar parts I keep a guitar around with Nashville tuning which is basically a six string that is strung only...

    HELP! purchasing HD recording system

My guess is that Midi users will probably do well to go with the Digi 001 over the 2408, however as I currently don't use midi (I'm sure this will change in the future) I chose the 2408 for the following reasons: for some reason there's no ADAT sync on the 001, but there is on the 2408. Also...

    Shopping for monitors...

I'm lucky enough to have a pair of (tri-amped)ATC 50's around for room monitoring but I always make sure to listen to all my mixes thru NS10M's and Tannoy PBM 6.5's (just because my ears are very used to them.)

    Distance between monitors?

Personally, I've found that if you mix with the monitors too far apart it weakens the stereo image in the center which may cause the instruments you've panned towards the center to sound too loud when played back on other systems. Also, it seems like placing the monitors too near the wall...

    Chris Cornell acoustic guitar sound?

Useless Info Dept: Chris Cornell's record was made in a house a couple of blocks from me and whenever I'd hear Josh Freese start laying down drums I'd take the dog for another walk just to listen. I felt kinda like a dork, but DAMN that guy can play...

layering guitar tracks with a Line 6 POD

Right, pglewis. It's the differences that make the difference (think about that). But really, that's exactly right. Think about it like this. If you recorded the same part twice with the same settings, same guitar, same everything, and panned the two tracks hard right and left then where...

    It's all in your hands!

Thought for the day: how many of us have recording rigs that are in some ways more advanced than what The Beatles "Love Me Do" was recorded on? Or Muddy Waters' "Mannish Boy" or Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away"? Just a reminder not to get too frustrated because you can't afford the Digidiot...

    How diverse are you?

I play guitar and bass on all my home recordings and I do the vocals as well. I also program drums with a little known (or perhaps well known) twist. I like my programmed drums to sound like drums (as opposed to bands like KMFDM who like them to sound like machines) so after I have the drum...

    EL34 or 5881

unless you're running a Rectifier or other amp with switchable bias, you may want to have a tech check your bias and make sure it's correct for your amp. The correct tube for the bias setting will sound better in either case (and it is possible to re-set your bias for different tubes).
