    Cardinal Points Pan Law

Well I think we've covered most of the bases on this one. But I'd like to be the devils advocate and disagree with the quoted statement. I believe LCR not to be the lazy route, but rather takes more discipline, planning, and experience to make it work correctly. If everything is out in "no...

    Cardinal Points Pan Law

Whether you actually listen to your mix in mono, or your "spidey sense" tingles you, you are in fact checking or at least concerning yourself about mono. I guess that depends on how you define mono. I'd say 90% of the time the listener isn't alone in an isosceles triangle config listening to...

    Cardinal Points Pan Law

You'd actually be surprised. If you listen to radio, you've heard alot more LCR than you think. The first name that comes to mind is Chris Lord-Alge, and it seems like he's all over everything! I think you guys are confusing old stereo recordings with the modern approach that cardinal points...

    Cardinal Points Pan Law

Not really true. For example, if you hard pan an XY stereo config you get a decent center with a good stereo picture - most classic stereo mic techniques achieve this. One thing to keep in mind is that the placement of an instrument in the stereo field isn't determined soley by the pan...

    Cardinal Points Pan Law

I would never assume to argue my point as definitive, it's only a personal opinion - whatever works, right? But for me, panning is akin to the "size" of a canvass. The texture, richness, depth, and overall impact of a painting should rely the least on the size of the canvass. The size of...

    Cardinal Points Pan Law

Pan pots are the least reliable way to create "space", or "excitement" IMO. A sure bet is using eq and arrangement. And that is what this is really all about. That is why mono is so important - it is the best test of a really well produced recording. To rely on precise pan locations is to make...

    DAW killed the rock star!?

Well at least he's not blaming home studio's for the demise of the "Big Studio" and that dumb assertion. Anyhow, I think it's a large assumption that musicians with home studios will spend all their time learing their gear rather than writing music and gigging. There are plenty of hours in the...

    What is my next step/Purchase????

Hi Don...I kinda went through this process last year that your embarking on. I have a good relationship with a major dealer and I basically had their whole store in my place demo'ing everything :) I'm going to go with chessrock here and say that mics make all the difference in the world. As...

    APEX Microphones

How can you go wrong with the price that pack sells for! They are what they are and the nice thing about home rec these days is that the cheap mics sound good, that is compared to the days when I was trying to home rec. What you'll find with the apex's compared to high end mics is that they...

    Behind the Scenes

I wonder if you can get those MTV "Classic Albums" on DVD. There have been some great spots that deal primarily with the recording. Jimi Hendrix to LEd Zeppelin to Nirvana. I'd buy the whole series.

Jim Peterik's studio - no dynamics?

No, not because they are expensive - but a great LDC is a very very versatile mic. And ususally sound great on everything from percussion to amplifiers.

Jim Peterik's studio - no dynamics?

I don't think it's that unusuall actually, I think it's really a matter of budget. If I had a bunch of Ela M 251's lying around, damn right you'd see them on O/H's etc :D I mean if you had a wicked room an mics of these caliber, you'd be crazy not to back off on your mic distances and combine...

    2nd mic for electric guitar

I use a LDC about 18" away from the speaker (ifet7). It just seems to sound like the amp sounds to me (which is a good sounding amp btw). I don't do the 2 mic thing anymore with a 57 and a room mic - just never was right for me. OTOH alot of guys swear by ribbon mics on guitar cabs (royer 121...

    Higher end preamp decisions

I'll second the chandler as well. I like it on overheads, kills on guitar. The other day I was abusing it just to see what it would do. The acoustic blew me away with the gain cranked on it! Having said that, I'm probably going to pick up a Sytek as well - you can't go wrong with a quality...

    Live Vocal Mic.

Really, I was surprised to see more Neumann KMS105's than any other mic on vocalists. I saw shure's the least...and I watched the whole damn thing :D

    Recording and Mixing Volum e...

Leave headroom when tracking (digital) as well - not just on the summing. You can clip your track without seeing the "red lite" when using filters. -6 is recomended, by those who know far more than me.

    My Mastering Internship

Yeah I have a pair of those, they're passive. Don't work for me on the low end though - they translate bottom heavy with my ears. EDIT: Re-read your post, yeah you CAN hear the bottom end....a fair bit. But I always have to notch the bass down after I find the right setting to get the things...
