    Stuck

What are monitoring on? The reason I ask is that it seems a bit lacking at both extremes of the spectrum. In that vein, I think the kick could be eq'ed to take some of the 150-400Hz woolyness out. I quite like the tune, but i feel like that it would flow better 5-10bpm faster (or with faster...

    First Semi Serious Mixing attempt.

Sounds promising, but i think the mix is a little less than desirable. Try listening to your favorite cd's, and really listen (maybe even take notes) A few things to get you started: Balance (how loud each part is relative to the other) Panning (left to right) Perspective (how close or far the...

    my first drum recording! critique?

Its a good start, but it sounds a bit odd to me. Firstly i would play with the drum tuning, the toms especially. I know it seems counter intuitive, but get the toms to ring out nicely and them damp them until they are controllable. When the drums sound good in the room, you can start messing...

Recording a Drum set tomorrow and i have a choice of these mics. Help

I like 4011's for overhead, i usually do a recorderman thing but on a session yesterday i did a spaced pair and was pretty happy. Kick - Re20 inside (again tuning of the kick will be very important esp if its closed) Snare - Sm57 will do the job fine, but the 441 (if you can fit it in!) has...

MOTU 2408 MKII & RME Octamic D not working together?

You do not need the word clock, adat has a built in clock. Have you tried just with adat?

Recording stereo with two different kinds of mics

You can use two different mics and pan them to get a pleasing sound, but it will not be a stereo recording. If you want to record a small ensemble then i would reccomend the same mics, but for acoustic guitar (im thinking pop/rock not for fingerstyle) i would just go with what sounds best

    . . . Ambient Vocal effects . . . .

I can only further reiterate what has been said. I would say get rid of whatever stuff you have downloaded (i apologize if my assumption is incorrect) and get a copy of Reaper (http://www.reaper.fm) which you can use a fully working trial of. Then i will be happy to help you

    How do high-end studios work?

In addition to what has been already said, workflow is often very different. For a lot of rock bands the band will be set up to play live, but with amps in iso booths so the only sources making noise into the drum mics are drums and vocals (although the singer could be in a booth as well) A...

Live Studio Recording - Can it be done well?

not trying to sound like an arsehole, but having amazing sounding drums and then putting them with poorly recorded vocals, guitars and bass is only going to accentuate the flaws in those tracks. If you want to do the whole track drums in the studio then do others at home i would recommend hiring...

    Drum Mix .. opinions?

Okay, not a bad start but it sounds like it could use some help. The snares ringing alot it sounds almost like whistle, this could be helped with tuning, damping and technique. Toms arent too badly represented but there a little flabby (tune them up a bit) Kick has no punch, i would try to get a...

    Amy Winehouse's cd.....nasty

That album was produced by Mark Ronson, who is widely known to run everything to tape at very hot levels (theres a SOS article before this cd was done) which could be why theres nasty distortion (overloading input circuit rather than tape saturation) I havent listened to the CD, her voice annoys...

Critique this sample mix for our band.

my biggest gripe is the timing, a song of this genre in my eyes should be really tight. The tempo can vary but every member of the band needs to aware of it. Mix wise, the kick isnt very pretty maybe replacing it would help.. same with the snare. Vocals arent very convincing performance wise...

Tracked live in my house - No one else

This is a track from my band, www.myspace.com/electricfurs that we recorded live in my house onto logic 8. Vocals were overdubbed afterwards because the bleed was awful. http://www.lightningmp3.com/live/file.php?id=12611 Please rip this apart, i really want to improve

    Whiskey-soaked voice?

im not sure about those guys, but when i have a heavy night with just whiskey i cant talk the next day. Maybe its that to a lesser extent, its hard to sing so you push your voice harder getting that gravelly sound

    Recording My Punk Band

matresses wont do anything to reduce bleed, there not heavy or stiff enough to work. Im actually fighting with that problem myself with a session we all tracked live, im having the singer come round tommorow an re-record some of the vocals, its just not worth playing with the bleed. Is there...

    Non apple mac?!

I have a macbook pro, and i am planning on trying osx86 on my brothers pos laptop, not because he wants it, just for a proof of concept. Think about it... you design an operating system for maximum of like 30 models of computer with say 5 revisions, its not amazing for you to troubleshoot every...
