Well, y'know, it's there so you can wrap your pinkie around it and mess with it while you play. I say there's altogether too many knobs on the guitar and when I debug mine I just leave that pot off and wire a more ordinary volume and tone ensemble.

The best thing about the Strat design is that it's so close to perfect for so many people that is is now a standard format. Thanks to standardization it is now possible to pay less that $100 for a guitar that is designed in a standard way, that is playable and can kick butt if the guy playing...

I actually did audition polystyrene, polypropylene, and Mylar caps in a homemade mic once, and the polystyrenes were significanty cleaner sounding than the others. These were the generic Mouser style polystyrenes, not the $$$ brand-name audiophile ones, which sometimes don't sound that hot.
