Welcome Graham... there's lots of good info here. Take a look at a lot of the stickies here and also the search function is pretty decent. This whole recording thing is like eating an elephant...one bite at a time. :)

I've personally never been able to hear any difference between 48 and 44.1 so I track everything at 24, 44.1. Saves time when I have to convert to 44.1 for a CD burn.

true dat. Over the years, I bought Monster, Mogami and ProCo. I've also got a pile of cheap cords. Not one iota of difference in "sound". OP... practice your soldering and make your own. You'll end up with Mogami quality at less than half the price. :)

I've got a beta 52 and a DIY subkick and what I did was put the 52 on the inside, pointed at the beater and 2 - 3 inches away. I scoop from about 200 to 250 with afairly wide Q and no bottom EQ boost. Just flat or a slight cut. I'll sprinkle a couple of db on the top end coming into about 5-6k...

Pretty much where I put mine. and not to de-rail... but do you guys use the same basic set up for bigger kits? Say...2 kicks, 6 toms, 8 or so cymbals? would you still use the G J technique?

And just to add to the... :D but as a side note, as you're placing the mic, the closer you get to the beater (inside the drum) the more "click" you'll get. Pull it back and ya get more "oomph". I use a homemade 8" sub for a subkick with a beta 52 a couple of inches back from, and pointed...

I'm still in that boat. I use an Akai DPS24, which is/was a very good board...do my mixes there and then take my 2 track to the pooter. Everything I do to my mixes in the computer is so much easier and quicker than what I'd have to do to get something similar in my Akai. And, truth be known...
