I'm thinking about getting either an Akai DPS16, Roland 1880 or the new yamaha to use as a visual interface between instrument and computer, and to use for tracking live (eight or so tracks)and because i like using knobs to some extent. Problem, the mac is costing heaps so what other (cheaper)...

Why doesn't anyone use macs? cost? If money isn't considered are they alot faster?

So you have to add compression so you can fit it on a cd (like ATRAC minidisc)???? Or is it like the control on good cd players where if you want the volume to go no higher than a certain level? or neither?

What do these do? Does anyone own one of these? Is it really that much better?

If it did sound better how come you never see them in orchestras and how come the worlds leading virtuoso's don't play them? keep your acoustic, violins are beautiful instruments made out of WOOD.

What is compression and why do i need it (or don't)??? And why do people always talk about using reverb to thicken up or create a sense of space? Why can't you just record with space instead of in a little room?

Is mastering just recording all your tracks to 2 while tweaking eq and adding effects?? What is there to do after this?
