Mixing: how long before your ears start lying to you?

I didnt spend that much time at 85db once I started mixing in the box. Because of the total recall, i would be refining the mix during the tracking process. This let me work mostly on balance and transitions during the "mix". Certain guitar tones will ruin my ears instantly. If I couldn't...

What are my chances of getting a hit in the Billboard Hot 100?

There might be one more metric you could use ti determine your chances of getting on the hot 100 list: what is the percentage of non-label affiliated artists that make the list? I am assuming you are independent.

How do you make a track louder without maxing out your headroom?

The -18dbfs should be your average level, not your peak level. Stuff you hear on the internet does have all the headroom used up. The final product does most of the time. It just the recording process that the headroom is important.

Order CDs vs. burn my own CD-Rs - a problem of CD player compatibility

Again, there is not one perfect speed. It will depend on the burner, the media, and it still probably won't play on a CD player that was designed before cd-r's came out. I don't think he is having a problem burning the cd, he is more likely having a problem playing a burned cd on an ancient...

Order CDs vs. burn my own CD-Rs - a problem of CD player compatibility

It can make things worse. The more sensitive they made the stuff, the more "bleed" you would get burning at slower speeds. The dots (pits) wouldn't be as crisp, which would cause read errors. For the most part, I think trying to optimise your product for people who still use a 30 year old (or...

    Crate GT1200 with Speaker

Most of the negativity about crate amps revolved around their distortion tones. The cleans were always good.

I forgot to dither 24bit -> 16 bit. Does it matter?

At worst, not dithering will affect the last fraction of a second as a song fades out, or the reverb trail as it fades to silence. If the listener is in a car, on a plane, walking on a noisy street, they won't be able to notice.

Order CDs vs. burn my own CD-Rs - a problem of CD player compatibility

None of my last 3 cars had cd players in them. It was all bluetooth and usb. The majority of people who want physical media are over 45. Not a good demographic to sell music to. Yes Scott, all cd players are old, but the ones that are from before the mid 90s would not play cd-rs.

Order CDs vs. burn my own CD-Rs - a problem of CD player compatibility

You are right, like I said, it's been a very long time since I did anything with physical media.

Order CDs vs. burn my own CD-Rs - a problem of CD player compatibility

Earlier cd players from before the mid 1990s would not play CDRs at all. Anything from about 2000 and newer should. Do you have another CD player to test it on? There was also something I seem to remember about the difference between CD+R and CD-R, but I haven't burned a CD in 15 years. If...

    Signature Guitar Strings?

Same with guitar strings. If you are in a drop Bb tuning, having thicker strings is necessary. If you are in an open G or DADGAD tuning, assuming you have a guitar dedicated to the tuning, it will make sense to customize the string gauges to what you are trying to do.

    Signature Guitar Strings?

The strings aren't different than normal sets, it's usually a non-standard gauge set based on the preferences and/or tuning the artist uses.

    remote recording question

You can do it. Export the backing track to a wave file and send them that. Then they can put it in their daw and lay down the vocal and send it back to you. By default, the information on the SD card is proprietary to tascam. It is useless without the machine. That is why you need to export the...

To Plek, or Not to Plek? That Is My Question

That hospital did charge enough to pay off the cost on the DaVinci machine over 5 years. Otherwise, they wouldn't have bought it. Return On Investment is not just profit. If a Plek machine fret job costs more than a skilled luthier, the luthier should be charging more than they do. The...

To Plek, or Not to Plek? That Is My Question

Should the customer pay more, maybe not. But to get a reasonable ROI on the machine, that's what has to happen to not lose money on the machine. firefighters and paramedics should make more money than football players, but they don't because they don't generate as much revenue as football, so...
