    Low mixing levels

Recording levels will depend on what your converters are aligned to (most are -20 to -16), that will be the sweet spot. However, if you record with a level at -18dBFS (irrespective of where your converters are aligned) you will get a good sound, your converters and DAW will not clip and the...

    Headphones or Monitors

If you're going the headphone route, may be a little more than the budget perhaps but Sennheiser HD-600 would be my first choice. But, if budget is tight, a pair of Sony MDR-7506 with Sonarworks isn't a bad choice. In any case recommend you look at adding sonarworks (can download free demo) -...

    Basement ceiling insulation

Before I would waste any money (because that's what you will be doing) on construction material for your ceiling you need to define what the above statement means. What are acceptable levels? How much transmission loss do you need? Have you actually measured the levels in the basement & up...

    What DAW are you using?

I have a Pro Control and I'm stuck at Pro Tools 10 since Avid no longer supports the device.

How would you lay out this far-from-ideal room?

This is where I would start. I would get something like roomEQ and measure/analyze the room to identify issues and treat them specifically to maximize acoustic treatments and budget. But just looking at the diagram, I'd put the bookcase in the closet, scrap the bed idea and get a couch that...

    Panning

There is nothing wrong with mixing in mono and if it sounds good to you....you're done. However, if you're seeking feedback, it's hard to determine without hearing it; you should post it on the mp3 clinic.

    Studio above basement

This^^^^^^ First, from an acoustics standpoint 30' x 12' is not big....however, it is better than 10'x 12' room; nonetheless it will still require treatments. I would recommend getting a room analyzer (i.e. room EQ, etc.) to measure the room at your mix position before doing anything...

    Cymbal Upgrade

I would recommend not limiting yourself to one brand....go to a drum store and go hit a crap load of cymbals until you find what you like or, until they throw you out of the store. ....If you do get thrown out of the store go to another store. Brass is expensive so make sure you're satisfied.

    Cymbal Upgrade

Really depends of taste and style. I'm currently recording using Paiste Signature series with a dark energy ride and I'm happy with the results; can't go wrong with 2002s either.

    Buying first Electronic Drum Kit

Do you plan on gigging the kit or just use in studio? Build quality and Play feel (mesh heads v hitting rubber - multi zone triggers) on the pads is the only real difference other than that all e-drum pads operate pretty much the same. Either way I would not spend the money on a drum module if...

MIDI Drum Kit Recording Velocities in DAW

The actual kit (i.e., drum pad) is irrelevant to volatility and are all pretty much the same - really just comes down to feel (mesh heads v hitting a hunk of rubber) & build quality. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a e-drum brain/module that didn't support volatility. I have a old simmons...

What studio monitor do you think is the biggest bang for the buck!

Don't know about the Tannoy but I picked up a pair of the JBL305 (very low price and some good reviews in groups) and I was extremely surprised by how well they actually sound and translate. At the price point I don't see how you could go wrong but at the end of the day it will come down to...
