I used to use Cool Edit Pro 15 years ago. I would definitely recommend upgrading like I did to Adobe Audition 3.0, very similar interface and controls with a lot more functionality. Still works perfectly today with plugins such as Guitar Rig 4 and Izotope Nectre 2 running live in the background...
