How much of a difference will upgrading an audio interface make?

Ha! I'm the reverse. I use the 414 for my go to mic, and have just ordered an inline preamp so I can see if I can perk up the sm7bI just treat as 'ok'? Seriously though - my old Ferroraph reel to reel with 1/4" unbalanced inputs connected to my 57 in the late 70's had no issues with hiss - the...

Audio cutting in and out using my scarlett solo

If the wav on the screen has no gaps or obvious level changes, the fault is in the replay stages. Confirm it by bringing a .wav or .mp3 file into the timeline - see if it's the same - then look for problems between the audio output of your device and the spakers/headphones. Sockets and cables...

How to connect 1/4 male mono jacket into laptop 3.5mm stereo

Be VERY careful that you protect the fragile 3.5mm socket. ¼" adaptors plus the plug plus the cable only need a good trip to snap the sockets! Gaffer tape the cable so if you yank it, it won't break anything!

    Reproducing that 80s sound

I think our confusion is just that we can’t quite put our finger on what it is that you’re using to sort of date video. You seem very convinced of this difference but we can’t quite get our heads around it. I listened to the links and am even more confused. I’m not even really sure about the...

Best equipment to record many people while also playing for a crowd

We’re doing quite a bit of ‘record everything’ projects now with our M32 or X32 desks into a MacBook. Piece of cake to setup. Sometimes it will be with small, medium or big PA or often no PA at all. Maybe an X32 rack would work for you with an I pad or control via computer? Second hand at...

    Cubase mixer console reset

Clicking to reveal the automation is something easy to miss but chilli has the spot on answer. I too spent entire running time holding the fader till I realised it.

    Pitchy Bass?

I’m still hung up on terms. Could be the usual bonnet/hood US/UK thing but there is a HUGE difference to being in tune and being in key. The key of a song, as in it’s in E is different to being flat or sharp. My test was always to give people a guitar and play the note on a piano or keyboard and...

    Backing vox plug-ins?

The allura thing is great but he wants Bev’s, not choral style stuff. He said that early on. What would be good is a plug in that takes in a vocal line in one voice and creates a new one in a totally different voice.

Noise from speakers when MacBook Pro plugged into mains???

So the only mains ground is the speakers? Then I think maybe we’re not talking hun at all. Best guess now is usb carried bus noise which has been a subject on 2i2 this interfaces before. We need a sample of the noise to hear it.

Utter novice - Wider frequency response needed for super low bass?

I think you just need to try some because they don’t just stop at X Hertz they start to tail off and with eq I suspect there isn’t a problem

    Which mic should I get?

A mic hears everything in its polar pattern. Some mics are limited in their frequency response while others sound bright or dull. The real decider is if the mic is sensitive to certain things and those certain things are positive or negative features. A bright mic in a bright room with an...

need help with recording. Not sure if this is possible

We are not talking about machine to machine are we? He wants to go into a computer which does not have support for copy protection flags or at least, mine don’t!

Need some condenser microphone advice for home:

yep! best advice hear. Unless you have two mics in your hand to compare, you cannote EVER trust mic facts like those hear because they are all personal opinion and not based on being able to judge for yourself. most are perfectly well meant - but it's like picking paint colours for somebody...

    fear of click tracks

I think everyone knows that rigid metronomes just hold you back, and the thin g you are nissing is that clicks are just there to keep things tight. Loose is bad, but loose is NOT what most 'loose' players are at all! they play around the beat tightly. Military bands are the most rigid, and...

    ASIO Nightmares

Even if you get it working, how long before you change the computer and don't have the card socket any longer? It's sad but music technology is a constant evolution and expense.

    Old vs new cubase

The real differences are just in bells and whistles and vst instruments and plug-ins. cubase is now 64 bit only - a nd lots of users were very fed up when 9.5 identifies the plugins as 32 bit and quarantines them. if your interest is midi and straightforward audio,SX is still ok - just missing...

    Alignment question - meter calibration

I've never actually worried about absolute levels. My old tape nachines were 300mV for 0VU on the meter. I'd level the group faders on my test signal fed into one input to give 0 on the meters, all the groups would be close to identical fader settings, and I'd see about the same on the tape...

    Spdif & adat

Bit late, but I can add a little more to the info here. I was one of the few involved in starting that qualification up, many years ago - and you are quite right that in Level 3 there is no requirement for in-depth understanding of digital protocols, BUT - students are expected to understand...
