    Cables and Such

In general, shorter cable lengths are better. The length should leave a comfortable amount of slack between the two pieces of gear. More importantly, it should be the correct type of cable. If the mixer output is balanced and the interface input is balanced, you would use a TRS cable. If...

    Exporting to mp3 problem

I agree about not going below 128, in an ideal situation. But the default conversion rate in Sonar might be set higher than that, worth checking out. Also, 8 minutes is indeed a long song, so it might not be possible to reduce the file size below 10 megs without compromising the sound. At that...

    Exporting to mp3 problem

Also, when you listed the sample and bit rate above you are listing the info for the original file. i.e. 44k and 16 bit. What we are referring to is the bit rate of the mp3 format. If you reduce that number you will reduce your file size.

    Exporting to mp3 problem

It doesn't matter how many tracks your original Sonar project is. When exporting to mp3 it is reduced to stereo, which is why the file size is always the same. So if you are going from 16 tracks to 2 tracks or 2 tracks to 2 tracks it will all end up being the same file size. The file size will...

So damn frustrating. a drummers take on a crap sounding amp.

The problem is that guitarist has that mud amp sound in his ear, he thinks that is what he should sound like. It's really more about retraining him to hear his guitar sound differently than anything with the amp itself. I wouldn't be surprised if the amp is messed up too, but what you really...

    Shed Studio?

Depends where you live. If you are in a cold climate the shed will be unusable during winter months. To be truly useful the shed would essentially have to be an addition to the house, i.e. it would be insulated and heated/airconditioned. Otherwise you really won't get anything done out there. I...

new 'used' echo audiofire 12 problems... think i got ripped off on CL again

The control panel won't launch unless the computer "sees" the AF12 device, that behavior sounds normal. It seems like your computer sees the AF software drivers, but not the device itself. Do you have another computer or laptop with firewire that you can try the install with? Or anyone with a...

New iMac, but how to connect analog mixer?

Yes, that Fast Track is not the way to go for your purposes. A square peg in a round hole, it would be nothing but frustration. What you really need is an 8 channel audio interface. I personally like the sound of the Echo Audio interfaces, and I think the AudioFire8 would suit your needs very...

New iMac, but how to connect analog mixer?

Amen to that. You buy a new iMac and then refuse to buy the one piece of gear that will allow you to actually connect your mixer to it and work as you want to, i.e. an audio interface. Buy the interface, it's that simple. An Maudio Fast Track is a good inexpensive way to go. I personally would...

Several MIDI OUTS to one MIDI IN

    Microverb substitute?

Nanoverb is the Alesis reverb for under $100. It has a small sweet spot, but if you can keep it right where it is happy it sounds decent.

    MIDI Patchbays

I have used several midi patchbays over the years. One of my favorites is the 360 Systems Midi Patcher. It's just what you are looking for. Practically everyone made a midi patcher back in the day. Roland, Yamaha, Kawai, JL Cooper, 360 Systems. Keep searching eBay, they do come up and are...

I bought a Mac to avoid frustration!

You might be better off upgrading PT rather than downgrading the Mac. Is the G5 you bought an actual G5 processor, or is it an Intel machine? Some of the early Intel Macs were still called G5's. If it is an Intel you really might consider updating it to OS 10.6 or 10.7 and getting PT9.

    Stuido Furniture + Equipment

You could also build your own racks or workstation. Design it around your gear and your studio space. As great as those work stations look, they take up a lot of space. While my homemade setup is not as slick looking, it is very space efficient.

Pro Tools 8 LE vs Pro Tools 9

Right, you can use PT9 with a Digi interface. It does seem a bit smoother, although I did sell my Digi 002 once I got PT9. I use PT9 with a MOTU setup and there are some annoying things once in a while where the software doesn't recognize all the I/O. I am using a 96 channel setup though, so...

    Overpriced thrift store junk!

Well that's just it, anybody with an internet connection can look up the recent prices on eBay and then set their prices accordingly. What they may not be doing is checking the *selling* prices versus the *listing* prices. That's where you see what something is really "worth" on the open market...

    upgrade advice

There's also the MOTU Traveler. It has four mic pres built in, plus ADAT I/O. So if you need more than four pres you can get a separate 8 channel mic pre to ADAT unit. Or, you could pick up the MOTU 8pre (around $550), which has 8 mic pres plus the ADAT I/O. If you really feel you need to spend...

    Audio Interfaces for $200

Sorry, I didn't notice "USB" in the thread title. The AudioFire2 is firewire, so it doesn't qualify for the poll! But I do own one and I must say it sounds very nice.

FMR RNC vs. ART PRO VLA II

I've owned the FMR and a couple ART PRO VLA's as well. The FMR is overrated in my opinion. I got rid of mine within a week of buying it, I was extremely disappointed. But for drum overheads it might be a possibility. I just thought it sounded small and kind of cheap to my ears. The PRO VLA is...
