1000 dollar mics vs 100 dollar mics

At some point, with most high end products of any type you're paying a portion of the cost of the units that are QC rejected before they put out the one unit that does pass. It's an indirect cost that not many people consider.

    Heavy Breathing Vocals EQ

I'd eq it any way it sounded good and fit in the mix. Chances are it's recorded close to the microphone, the sound of the voice is rounded out by the proximity effect. It would probably benefit from liberal compression.

    warmth

Guitar distortion usually includes some level of soft peak clipping which is a bit different. Analog "warmth" is more like soft tube overdrive in that it "thickens" the sound by adding 2nd order harmonics, and a small amount of 3rd order.

    Pop-Song HELP appreciated!!

I agree with the others, the vocals are a little too loud/forward and the drums need some attitude especially the snare. I think some additional considerations need to be made in the bass/low mids. The low area of the mix sounds a little light to me which makes this song feel dated. Modern pop...

    Waves new Scheps 73 plugin

Mixed a rock track near entirely with the new Scheps 73 and wrote my thoughts on it while I have the demo. Blog post also includes a lovely comparison video with the V-EQ3, another Waves plugin based on the Neve 1073. Short of it is the EQ portion is nearly identical to the V-EQ3 but lacks the...

    what level for vocals?

If we're talking more theory than technique then let us chew on this. I grew up listening to, predominantly, rock music. Rock vocals are usually as important or less important than the music itself so they're usually snuggled in pretty close to the music. Like you, I have a tendency to mix the...

Sibilance makes me want to cut my ears off

I don't think it's particularly sibilant in that it's not terribly harsh or cutting. I think you may just be self conscious about the performance of the esses. One of the tricks I picked up is to, if you have a boom stand, mount the mic from above at about nose level. This does two things: it...

Mixing distorted guitar - question about echo/slapback/reverb specifically

I suppose I should have mentioned I am not the recording engineer or musician in these cases. Learning off rather well done stems.

Mixing in the corner vs headphones

You're dealing with the boundry effect, so you're double boosting some frequency on one side while you have a speaker in the corner. Other than heavy treatment for the corner, the best you can do is mix in the headphones, check in the monitors, and then check on other systems like your car. Low...

Mixing distorted guitar - question about echo/slapback/reverb specifically

As I learn mixing, mixing distorted guitar is a bit of a blind spot for me. I can get general balance and I can get them to fit, but it still feels like they are all independent units rather than this sexy wall of sound. I think delay/reverb (an 1/8 note gentle slapback and a little bit of...

Do I Really Need the SSL 4000 Plug-In?

I haven't dug into the channel strip or EQ but I'm really digging the buss compressor. It's quite punchy in comparison to the V-Comp (Neve based) which is in the Classic collection along the SSL and API stuff.

Stereo vs dual mono - ITB mixing

One of the things that came my mind, especially hearing all over the place that OTB tracks seem "wider" or "more 3d", ad naseum, is the idea that most stereo processing is just dual mono. This would mean there are slight variations in any "dynamic" processing like compression and saturation...

Best electronics to salvage parts from

I got the, probably terrible, idea of building some distortion pedals from transistors and opamps salvaged from older electronics. What devices do you think would have some goodies? I was thinking some old boomboxes or VCRs. Things I could find in a thrift store. Has anyone done anything similar?

What do think about the Ozone dynamics plug as a mix comp?

Ah, I'm more use to this being described as compressors in series than vertical, my apologies. It's common, for sure, as it usually yields better sounding results to knock, say, 4db from two compressors than 8db from one. The first is usually set for fast attack/release with the second set for...

What do think about the Ozone dynamics plug as a mix comp?

All this is, is a multiband compressor. I use Adobe Audition which licenses it as a 4-band compressor. I use it quite a bit outside of mastering if I have to mix, say, a really troublesome track or if I have to mix a drum loop that have been mixed down to one stem. Don't go too crazy with it, I...

    How do you Mix?

I go for drums and bass first and dial in my low end. I do vocals on top and then other mid and high range instruments. I feel like the vocal should sit on top of the low end but be surrounded by panning in the mid and upper ranges. If I'm mixing and I'm raising the level of my vocal buss then...

    Mxing a guitar

While I say listen to some reference material and experiment, here is a recipe to get you started Vocals center Guitar 60% left Guitar SEND to reverb 100% right Violin 60% right Violin SEND to reverb 100% left If it's a gentle song, go for reverb. If it's a bit more aggressive, then slapback...

    OZone Questions!

Ozone is a mastering plugin. Saturation in this context will probably be gentle distortion and compression. It can give a more subtle round, glued together, feeling to a mix. Trust your ears, if you like it, use it. In terms of "up front" vocals, you have two choices: compression or pushing...

Lets talk EQ for a moment

I mix ITB and I don't foresee that changing any time soon (mostly a hobby although I'm mixing some tracks for a friend who is signed in the UK, and most of my investments are going towards mics right now). But lets talk EQ plugins. Not considering really colorful, interactive EQs that cut and...
