It actually may be BETTER to leave them powered up, as what tends to be the most dangerous time for a electronic component is the initial startup and power off, not the time it is running stable. This is especially true for power supplies.

Hi Neal,
I am a bit of a nostalgic about gear too, but my era is the 1970's/1980's (and earlier if possible).
I would look for items all from the same era to help match things up and keep the look vintage.
SO, what you need is:
A sound module- You dont need to match anything to this, but some...
Have you tried some compression on the kick and snare?
Try a low ratio (maybe 2:1 or so) and just moderate compression (to taste).
Don't emphasize the lowest bass too much. A lot of the tightness comes from the mid twack of the drum. Maybe cut 200-300 hz a bit, too.

Here is my console, a DDA QII. I bought it on Public Surplus for $500!
I had a birch housing made for it. It is 8 ft wide by about 4 feet deep. Under the console I have two sidecars full of rackmounted gear.
On top is more rack space (4U I think) plus a smaller rack area for some of my modular...
I will have to confirm that those dimensions are correct. The room looks a bit bigger than this for some reason.
Looking from the console, "east" wall, past the closet I believe is incorrect. There is no wall there yet, it is part of the rest of the basement.
I think I have about 5-6 feet...
So considering my choices, how about placement of the console? Should it still be in the general area I have described? Seems like it , but just forget the wall in the middle and vocal booth.
I have a feeling you guys are going to save me a lot of money, work and heartache. I know from experience I cant get good sound in a square box but was hoping to make it somehow usable.
I wonder if a better solution would be to isolate my equipment (Otari 4 track, PCs and other noisy stuff) and...
If I had to bring in a band it would more than likely be 1 to 2 instruments at a time. Any drums I do are either on my electronic kit or from a MIDI keyboard, so isolation from drums is not an issue.
If I did want to record live real drums it would have to be with no other instruments (except...
Break the sound in your head into a few categories. Is it a thin sound? Like a violin, or more like a cello?
Does the sound significantly change over time? What am I already familiar with that is like this?
If it is a "synthesized" type of sound, does it sound like a square...
Regarding purpose to the room, most of my instruments go direct to mix/tape (I have a lot of synths), so I would use the live space mainly for vocals and acoustic guitar and the rest would be experimental.
The thought is to have a nice room to mix in first, recording live is secondary since the...
The basement is unfinished, with some framing (The closet and east wall attached to it.)
I may either drop the vocal booth or make it so it is foldable against the wall.
I already have some bass traps and acoustic foam and I am thinking of building diffusion for the ceiling and 1 wall of each room.
Some of the mics I had back in the 70's/early 80s:
Shure SM 58
Shure SM57
Shure SM 81
Sennheiser 421
AKG C451
PZM (80's)
Some high impedance mics (uggh)
I went to UCLA Film Scoring Program, and we had to write quickly to get assignments finished.
Whenever I could not think of a tune right off, I took a warm bath. Lying there with no distractions, ideas would just start popping into my head. Sometimes just a melody but often full...
I am just about ready to start building out my basement, half of which is going to be a small studio space.
I have a huge mixing board, a 40 ch DDA QII british console, which will be in a control room and a small recording space for when I add acoustic guitar, individual instruments and vocals...
