Leaving Mic Idle w/ Phantom Power

It actually may be BETTER to leave them powered up, as what tends to be the most dangerous time for a electronic component is the initial startup and power off, not the time it is running stable. This is especially true for power supplies. -AsciiRory

    Vintage studio, midi, software, macintosh

Hi Neal, I am a bit of a nostalgic about gear too, but my era is the 1970's/1980's (and earlier if possible). I would look for items all from the same era to help match things up and keep the look vintage. SO, what you need is: A sound module- You dont need to match anything to this, but some...

    Suggestions for Tightening Kick Drums

Have you tried some compression on the kick and snare? Try a low ratio (maybe 2:1 or so) and just moderate compression (to taste). Don't emphasize the lowest bass too much. A lot of the tightness comes from the mid twack of the drum. Maybe cut 200-300 hz a bit, too. -AsciiRory

    Basement studio thoughts

The sidecars face upward towards my face (Trapezoidal?), and when in use I pull them out from under the console and point them towards me a bit.

    Basement studio thoughts

Here is my console, a DDA QII. I bought it on Public Surplus for $500! I had a birch housing made for it. It is 8 ft wide by about 4 feet deep. Under the console I have two sidecars full of rackmounted gear. On top is more rack space (4U I think) plus a smaller rack area for some of my modular...

I will have to confirm that those dimensions are correct. The room looks a bit bigger than this for some reason. Looking from the console, "east" wall, past the closet I believe is incorrect. There is no wall there yet, it is part of the rest of the basement. I think I have about 5-6 feet...

All sounds interesting. But doesn't putting the mixer facing the wall make it difficult to work with anyone else in the room?

So considering my choices, how about placement of the console? Should it still be in the general area I have described? Seems like it , but just forget the wall in the middle and vocal booth.

    Basement studio thoughts

I have a feeling you guys are going to save me a lot of money, work and heartache. I know from experience I cant get good sound in a square box but was hoping to make it somehow usable. I wonder if a better solution would be to isolate my equipment (Otari 4 track, PCs and other noisy stuff) and...

    Basement studio thoughts

If I had to bring in a band it would more than likely be 1 to 2 instruments at a time. Any drums I do are either on my electronic kit or from a MIDI keyboard, so isolation from drums is not an issue. If I did want to record live real drums it would have to be with no other instruments (except...

how can i find sounds that are in my mind

Break the sound in your head into a few categories. Is it a thin sound? Like a violin, or more like a cello? Does the sound significantly change over time? What am I already familiar with that is like this? If it is a "synthesized" type of sound, does it sound like a square...

    Basement studio thoughts

Regarding purpose to the room, most of my instruments go direct to mix/tape (I have a lot of synths), so I would use the live space mainly for vocals and acoustic guitar and the rest would be experimental. The thought is to have a nice room to mix in first, recording live is secondary since the...

    Basement studio thoughts

The basement is unfinished, with some framing (The closet and east wall attached to it.) I may either drop the vocal booth or make it so it is foldable against the wall. I already have some bass traps and acoustic foam and I am thinking of building diffusion for the ceiling and 1 wall of each room.

How do you come up w/that initial idea/set of lyrics/melody/etc

I went to UCLA Film Scoring Program, and we had to write quickly to get assignments finished. Whenever I could not think of a tune right off, I took a warm bath. Lying there with no distractions, ideas would just start popping into my head. Sometimes just a melody but often full...

    Basement studio thoughts

I am just about ready to start building out my basement, half of which is going to be a small studio space. I have a huge mixing board, a 40 ch DDA QII british console, which will be in a control room and a small recording space for when I add acoustic guitar, individual instruments and vocals...
