    Opinion on mix/master

Hey, thanks Keith, I appreciate that. It's getting a bit late here. Just popped on to reply here quickly before I go to bed. I will try and get a WAV file on my google drive tomorrow and post the link to it here tomorrow :)

Yes, I have noticed it do that as well. I try to change the volume of the channel track rather than the master is I can to combat that. Having said that I have my master fader set to -1 now, and with the limiter set with a -0.1 ceiling it's coming out at -1.1 :)

    Opinion on mix/master

Hey guys, So, sorry it's been a few days. I have had some stuff going on at home. I have taken a bit of a stock take of things, and had a rethink about how I wanted to attack this. First off, I have tried putting a limiter on the kick and the snare. Not only do I think it has helped a bit...

    Opinion on mix/master

Cool, to be fair I normally add a bit of compression to kick/snare, but I have never added a limiter to them. I am going to go back to my mix and see what I can have a play with to make a difference. :) Out of interest what sort of range do you think I should be aiming for in regards to...

    Opinion on mix/master

I have got some compression on some of the noisier parts of the mix, like the distorted guitars, drums, bass, and a bit on the vocals to try and make them sit nicer in the music. Would you suggest I try using more then? If so on what parts, and how much are we talking? For example at the moment...

    Opinion on mix/master

To be fair it's not so much that I care about the LUFS of any one particular song, (my choice of reference for this song was simply because it's close style wise to the band I recorded). And I know from reading things online about LUFS you are right that as long as I am at -14LUFS or above it...

    Opinion on mix/master

So I tried lowering the master fader by 2dB on my mastering set up. Converted it to MP3 and then brought it back into the DAW. It isn't clipping the master track anymore, which is obviously a plus. Problem is now it is very noticeably quieter than a commercial track. There either has to be...

    Opinion on mix/master

So what am I doing wrong? What is this "true peak" thing? why is it coming out so loud when at no point in my mixing or mastering am I clipping on anything? If I drop my gain to lower that rating then I get nowhere near the LUFS of the reference track, and it comes out way WAY quieter next to...

    Opinion on mix/master

See, this is exactly why I am so confused as to why my masters are coming out so bad. I have got the Youlean meter, and I am looking at a reference track at the same time. When I bounce my mix it is no where nearly clipping. Nothing in the mix is clipping, the master fader isn't clipping. Yet...

    Opinion on mix/master

Yea I'm aware there are some timing issues with the performance. I'm sure it's something I could fix at some point. My big concern is getting a master that sounds acceptable ?

    Opinion on mix/master

Hey, just replied to bouldersoundguy with a new master I did. I went though my mastering chain again and recompressed it to try and make sure nothing was clipping at any point during the process. I think it's better than it was, but still not right :-/ As for the drums: The drummer of that band...

    Opinion on mix/master

Yea that's what I am hoping for the most about being on this forum that I can actually learn to do this something like properly lol. Long story short: I've always loved music/music production, but due to other life events I have never done more than mess about with it. However this year has...

    Opinion on mix/master

Nope, sadly not. It was basic to say the least considering it was an A level. :(

    Opinion on mix/master

Trying to take my mixing/mastering a little bit more seriously. Did an A level in music tech back when I was a teenager, but decided I want to actually start getting better at it. A friends band kindly let me do a recording of them, so here it is. Any advice on what I could do to make it better...

    Acoustic + Vocal Mix.

I like the natural sound of that. Kind of nice to hear something that isn't over processed. Only thing I would change, but this is personal opinion I think, is I would bring you vocals down just a bit so they sit more just on top of your guitar. As it is at the moment there are times I feel your...

Can you listen to my songs? (youtube links, final product)

Honestly, I don't think there was much wrong with the original. As others have mentioned a different/slightly less harsh sounding snare might have sat nicer in the track, and the guitar solo bit needs bringing down, but if you could do those two things then it's fine. I know other people have...

    Zoom H6 or Tascam Dr-680?

I haven't had first hand experience with either of those, but looking at them I would have thought the Tascam would be better suited for what you want. Having said that, with the price of the Tascam have you considered something like the Zoom R24? I have a Zoom R16 which is the model under the...

Line out to 8 track recorder/mixer.

To be honest, I don't have an exact set up in mind. It was purely something I thought might help increase the amount of mics I can use in a hypothetical situation where more would be needed. The only issue I would have with recording 3+ mics from a PA is the lack of mixing capability after its...

Line out to 8 track recorder/mixer.

Sounds like a good idea. Wouldn't that mean taking up 2 on of inputs though instead of 1? The only reason I was thinking of doing this was to increase (in a fashion) my number of inputs. For example: In a live/gig situation I could run a line out for vocals/backing vocals so they only take up 1...

Line out to 8 track recorder/mixer.

Thanks Jimmy. It's one of those things, where I had a little voice in my head telling me it was fine and just to do it, but another one in the background going "but if it isnt and you wreck your input you have no money to replace it". lol
