If you don´t need many channels and if you´re a guitarrist, the Eleven Rack is the one to go for. I use it for everything but drums. I also bought a external preamp because the built in one is not good at high gain settings, which you´ll need to record dynamic mics.

As of mic choice, definitely condenser , maybe small diaphragm. As of technique, it´s hard to start and stop naturally. A good tip is to record a few bars and delete the first and last bars in the recording.

I pretty happy with my yamaha HS80.

You definitely should check Presonus stuff. The StudioOne is really intuitive and complete with a lot of plugins. If you buy the interface, the DAW is for free.
