    Recording bass

I've been recording DI for years. I found that round wound strings sound much better..the notes have more definition than flat wounds. I use a 64 Precision. I tried a few DI's and even my Kemper which has some bass patches. None of them sound like a bass through an ampeg in a room. I have...

    Speed up a song

I just did this to a mixed song in Cubase... I sped it up about 6 BPM...110 to 116 with time stretch. . I can't hear any artifacts.

    Converter Question

I am using a Steinberg UR44 interface. Would the converters of an RME sound significantly better/diffeernt? I am less interesting in the preamps and more interested in possibly upgrading my home studio converters.

    Recording bass

I have struggled as well...and now I love the bass sounds I am getting. I switched to flat wound strings recently which was a huge improvement. The sound is much more focussed now. I record DI via a Great River pre....the hi Z inputs of my Steinberg UR44 do not sound near as good. The GR has...

    let me see your studio!

I just put together this studio desk to house a new DAW...added a LilFreq to my small but might band outboard gear.

    Studio reconfiguration

I'm excited as a kid on Xmas eve. It started when a hard drive failed on my 7 yr old computer. That led to a new DAW. That made me think that there had to be a more elegant studio design than setting my monitor and keyboard on an IKEA table with my rack gear in a rack boxes. So I am getting...

It's Only Tueday - Title cut of my new CD

YouTube Here is the title cut of my new CD. I tracked my vocals, bass, basic keys, and guitars to a drum loop at home. Then I sent that to a studio drummer friend in Nashville. Then the tracks went to Orlando where my friend, John Marsden, added the horn arrangement and mixed it. Truly a...

what is your favorite song to sing?

Recently, Mary Jane's Last Dance...everyone says I sound like Tom Petty anyway...and Can't Find My Way Home by Blind Faith. Our acoustic trio does them.

    A guitar rock song

Here is a song that is inspired by the 70's Stones. It's about how isolated we are in society today...each in his own echo chamber of news while the world rages around us. I was listening to a youtube guitar lesson on open string leads and came up with the main riff. I built the song around...

Manley elop Vs focusrite 430 or Avalon 737

I had an Avalon 737...the compressor was ok but the preamp was uninspiring...every mic sounded dead. I have a Great River pre and a Summit TLA-100 now that I love.

Fender Teles and swimming through the Fender sea

When they were restringing and setting up my new American Standard this weekend in the shop they kept breaking the high E. There was a sharp edge in the bridge plate which they filed...now it's OK.

Fender Teles and swimming through the Fender sea

I just bought an American Special Tele for $900 new yesterday. I love tele's and I own a really nice 55 that never leaves the house. I was gigging with a strat and, damn, I love tele's...kind of a one trick pony but it does that trick really well! I got it in Lake Placid blue with the...

An angry song about life in Corporate America - I'm not your man

Here is a song we finished recently. The guitars are all Kemper profiles. I love this thing. Anyhow, I've worked in environments where is was very unwise and self destructive to say what you thought, or express an opinion. It's made me think about hw cool retirement will be when I no longer...

Do you ever have some days when ...

I mostly record songs I write and I have kind of the opposite problem. Recording the song is part of my writing process. When I am in a song I always feel like it is the best song I have ever written and maybe this will be the one that gets a big response from the world. After I put it down...

    Doubling vocals

I double my backing harmony lines more than my main vocal...it thickens the sound, if that's what you are looking for. BTW....I have the ADT and don't really like it...but I did use it subtley recently on a nylon string rhythm part instead of a chorus effect. Nice.

C4 Multiband Compressor - Range vs Ratio?

I am going to be honest with you. I bought the C6 a few years ago and pretty much never use it. That said I use the Renaissance Compressor and EQ's all day long. My ears aren't good enough to hear the good in the C6.

How important are scales and theory in your guitar playing?

I am a guitar player and I should have practiced scales more in my younger years to build up speed. That said, I started playing a little late...mid-teens. In my senior year of high school I took 1 year of piano lessons where I told the teacher that I wanted to learn music theory. Luckily he...

How Many Guitars do you own

I have a lot of guitars (12 including a bass, dobro and banjo)...some gems, some players for recording....like a Korean PRS just so I have humbuckers for when I need that sound...or a Cordoba Nylon string guitar. I am nearing retirement and I just traded a 1958 000-18 and $ for a newer...
