Well, I went to the studio and it seems the tone issue I am having may be guitar related (dark sounding) so I am going to work on tracking some additional guitars and bring a bunch of stuff to work through.

So went to a nice project studio tonight to get some guitar tone help, and after trying a couple amps (Marshall, Ampeg, Krank) we dialed up some tones (that didn't sound all that different from what I was getting at home) and the guru uttered what came up here, "the guitar is dark." Aha! So what...

I am getting closer to a tone that I can live with, but I have decided to get some professional help. Going to work with a local semi-pro and see if I can't up my game on this guitar stuff. I will post back shortly!

This issue is sound based, but I think it may be how I set up the amp rather then how I am mic'ing. I am enlisting some professional help, lol. Found a local studio that does reamping, going to record some DI tracks bring gear and work through my issue, learn about reamping and other stuff, see...

Thank you for these responses - VERY helpful. I am going to start by moving the e609 over the the edge of the dustcap to see if I prefer that placement, and adding an SM57 directly adjacent to it to see which mic I like better. I'll also play around with a HPF to clean some lows out. I'll post...

OK, so I am a multi-instrumentalist who plays guitar. I have never played guitar in a band so I have no pre-established tone that has been ball-parked through rehearsal with other instruments. I mostly play with myself, lol. This is a problem as I am recording an EP and I have the drums and bass...

I use a Rode NT4, a fixed XY stereo condenser. I aim it at the snare using a string to line it up so that drum has no phase issues and I let everything else work itself out.

Most places that will replicate / duplicate will help you with these types of questions. If they don't, you should look at other companies. And many will "red-book" your files for you, for a low cost. I am not talking mastering, though, no compression or eq'ing.

I did my garage a few years back in my last house. Put in an extra wall with a door between the house and the garage door with Soundstop, insulation and drywall, leaving 6 ft for storage. Live room was 20 x 12. Had the control room in the house (in a utility room) and had a double pane window...

Long story short, I am having a hell of a time tracking guitars for myself. How many of you reamp or send out your DI tracks to be reamped by pros? Thanks in advance!

Absolutely this will work.

Mackie 824s (Mark I) - good speakers, great for the money.

Unless you have a well tuned kit and a great room, drum sounds can be tough. I hate to say it, but samples - as a replacement or to augment.

Another vote for Mackies. Good studio monitors, great for the money.
