Please Mix This - A Challenge (really, very challenging)

I've always loved Chris's music. About 15 years ago, I had the opportunity of mastering a bunch of his songs for a compilation cd. It was right about the time my son was born so when ever I hear these songs, I remember what an amazing time of my life that was. Thank you SO much for the bump...

    average mix time

I voted 6 hours only because it's never 1 hour. It takes about 1/2 hour for me to get the files onto the computer. Most of my mixes take me three to five hours.

    $3500 mix vs. my mix.

Yes, B is the pro mix. Mix A has way too much low end. I don't like either mix, for the reasons stated above. It's a cool song though.

    2 new mixes from Gonzo

Hmm. Unless you have monitoring that goes down to 30hz or so, it will be hard to make adjustments down there. I do understand your situation - no mud is better than earthshaking bottom. If you have a room that is treated acoustically, I'd be nice to get a sub. You may be able to identify the...

    2 new mixes from Gonzo

Hey Man... long time no speak. :) I listened to both and felt the bottom end does need work. It could come down to a matter of taste, but I was thinking it needed more stuff around 40hz and perhaps a touch of low mids, around 200hz. It did seem hyped around 6khz - the cymbals and voice...

Any EQ adjustments that you *always* make?

From the article... "Ainlay dialed in both low and high shelving filters on the main acoustic: a 3 dB shelving cut at 50 Hz and a 6 dB shelving boost at 16 kHz. Using the NSEQ's high-mid control, he also boosted 4 dB around 4.5 kHz using approximately a half-octave Q (bandwidth). On the...

I'm getting ripped off on ebay!!!!

The item description says the case is large and there is a shipping charge. It also says to email for shipping details. Seems to me you should have asked him what the shipping cost would be.

    DIY Mastering Clinic #1!!!!!

I like the distinction in the bass guitar, but I'm only listening with headphones at my workplace right now. I'll listen later to see home this sounds at home. Can you give us a little rundown on what you did?

    DIY Mastering Clinic #1!!!!!

Interesting how some addressed the chopped first note of that guitar intro. I had considered cutting the intro short but felt compelled to leave it as the mix was originally. Cool to fade in though. :) What about that section near the end coming out of the heavy guitar part? Was I the only...

    best moniters for 350

Thats right. I wasn't suggesting he get NS-10s. SouthSide glen made the best point on the thread.. IMO.

    best moniters for 350

Isn't it possible for a beginner home recorder to be confused by that statement? They most definitely should sound good when a good mix is played through them. Even NS-10s. :)

Here's my final. http://www.fullspectrumaudio.com/dark-and-lonely-fsa-final.MP3 A little less high mids than my previous, and less limiting.

    DIY Mastering Clinic #1!!!!!

I did spend most of my time trying to fix the low end. As far as the overall brightness of my master, comparing to various reference material (pop) I didn't feel I was far off on the balance. I'm very curious to know what others feel. Tom??? IMO, the balance of the mix was way too bass...

    DIY Mastering Clinic #1!!!!!

Oops, OK. Sorry to derail (if I did) My treatment was EQ, a little M/S processing in the bass,d-essing, and limiting. What struck me on first listen (best time for me to hear problems) was too much bass, lots of mud around 100-200, not much air and presence. I did alot of searching around...

    DIY Mastering Clinic #1!!!!!

I worked on this a little tonight. This is an interesting problem to solve in the bass. I’m looking forward to seeing how everyone else tries to tackle the problem. That being said, I was thinking - perhaps it would be better not to discuss methods just yet? I’d like to see everyone try...
