Thanks for the replies. It is not clipping that cause the problem as the noise is there with faders all the way down. It appears to work fine now and again but for some reason goes wrong again. I will just have to keep at it!

I am using M AudioFast Track and Pro Tools. When I try to record vocals I get a horrible distorted sound instead - like a Dalek. (No, my voice doesn't normally sound like that) Anyone had the same problem?

I have looked but I can't see what a small audio interface has that a mixing desk doesn't. There must be a way to use a mixing desk for recording only vocals? My problem seems to be that I can't monitor track and vocals at the same time. How would an audio interface change...

Nothing complicated here. I have prepared backing tracks on my laptop. I simply wish to record vocals alongside track and have the ability to mix and add effects later. Do I simply need a mic pre amp or will I require a mixing desk?
