How to write songs, when you have absolutely nothing to write about?

I can't imagine someone thinking that you have to do it all or you're inept. If it wasn't for George Gershwin's brother, Ira, there would have been many, many lost songs. Hammerstein of Rogers and Hammerstein. Lorenz Hart of Rogers and Hart. Virtually every opera composer had a...

Barney Kessel played with one of my teachers. He'd let me sit in the first half of each set. One night Kessel was in the crowd and I got shell shocked. He turned around with a "what the heck is going on" look. I'm a bassist. 99% of what I play is on the Pollmann bass in my avatar. The...

Lesson 1. How to play scales. Do you really know your scales? This is where the rubber meets the road. It's a natural reaction to say, “yeah, I know my scales.” Do you know them well enough to play them in front of somebody? Seriously, do you. Scales need to be part of a musicians...

When I hear solos at a music store or have a student improvise for me I hear the same wrong notes. I used to make fun of those players, but not any more because it doesn't do that player any good and makes me sound like a pompous know-it-all. They simply don't know what they're doing. All...

What is the difference between (P) and (J) pick-ups?

The Precision is virtually the industry standard bass in the studio. No frills with a fabulous tone. Of course, I'm talking about Fender. Other brands are good and what's best is always subjective. A P-J set up is going to widen the scope of the bass since the J pickup is 99% at the tail...

This is very true. Not that overdubbing is bad. When I'm recording jazz everyone is recorded at the same time including the solos. It affords the opportunity for the musicians to play off each other and contribute spontaneously. Mind you it's acoustic straight ahead jazz and not fusion.

    Midi keyboard - 25-key vs 49-key?

I don't see that as a problem since most entries are one line at a time. If one wants enter a live keyboard performance using the entire range then the 25 key. For a $100 it's hard to go wrong.

How do you think about this genre?

That's good. Not sure how much leg pulling you're doing but I suspect it's 99%. I can tell you this from my studio experience... Genre is very important. If the producers says it's a honky tonk tune then you better know what that means. West Coast Swing, samba, rhumba, mambo, dixieland...
