    Classical Flute

Or get a pair of Line Audio CM3 (wide-cardioid) or OM1 (omni) - £99 each. I guess you'd want to record stereo?

low budget microphone for classical piano recording

A pair of Line Audio OM1 (omni) - £99 each, can't go wrong. Or try CM3 (wide cardioid) if recording closer to the piano. Record in stereo definitely.

    Talk to me about converters

I'm sure you can bypass the internal pre with most converters/audio interfaces these days (as is the case with my Prism Lyra 2, though the pre is pretty good and I use it when recording piano solo...) Any idea on budget? Apollo Twin? Focusrite Clarett? Lynx Hilo? Antelope? Benchmark ADC? Or...

Large Ensemble Recording - what to do now

ugh I wish I could transport my gears more easily without having to fork out more for cases etc. I use laptop more for remote recording (turning off antivirus, wi-fi, screensaver, on max-performance power mode, separate SSD drive to record tracks from the main SSD for operating Studio One pro...

Large Ensemble Recording - what to do now

I know exactly what you mean regarding unattended recording - so hard to focus on recording whenever I'm playing in a freelance ensemble I would usually have to set up in less than 1.5 hours. I'd love to get an opportunity to record at St Sepulchre one day... I mainly record at St Clement Danes...

    Budget Preamp ideas

Line Audio does a handmade, 2-channel mic preamp (Line Audio Design - Made in Sweden) with pretty decent spec for the price (under 230 GBP) - really clean and transparent. They also do 8-channel version as well. Preamp in Focusrite and Steinberg units are pretty decent Otherwise in long term -...

Large Diaphragm Cardioid Condenser for Grand Piano Recording

I was recording my friend's informal recital over the weekend using my Sennheiser MKH 8020 with Prism Lyra 2: https://soundcloud.com/leushira/2015-03-07-06-hindemith-sonata/s-nf53U Steinway model A baby grand in a basement performance area (boxy dry acoustic) - the microphones not only...

    Whats a good microphone?

I guess it's down to personal opinion as to what sound you prefer... And I guess it's not just the microphones which matter a lot i.e. audio converter, cable, monitor, etc. Speaking of which - just got the Prism Lyra 2 delivered and waiting for MKH 8020 pair to arrive... I'll look forward to...

    Whats a good microphone?

Agree - for the listed price the spec doesn't seem remarkable at all. For ribbon mic you might as well get a few Rupert Neve ribbon microphones (SE Electronics RNR1) or Rode NTRs.

Antelope Zen Studio for homerecording and portable recordings-Wowee what fun

Sounds fun - I was looking at Antelope Zen too... But I decided to go with the Prism Lyra 2 and plan to trade in my Focusrite Octopre Mk II for something like the Audient ASP 880 8-channel preamp to connect via ADAT. But I was tempted by it nevertheless particularly with the number of...

    Need help with an interface...

Focusrite iTrack or Scarlett Solo would be good. Steinberg UR-22 is rock solid unit at pretty low price with Yamaha preamp and record up to 192 kHz / 24-bit. Only downside maybe that phantom power button can only switch on/off both channels at the same time..

Large Diaphragm Cardioid Condenser for Grand Piano Recording

Just ordered Prism Lyra 2 and Sennheiser MKH 8020 pair - and look to trade in my Octopre MK II for something else to link to Lyra 2 via ADAT... Hopefully a big difference in sound I'm capturing from the model D Steinway next time I record... Going back to the question of a large cardioid...

Thanks for that! I'd check them out...

    RME Fireface 802

Yeah - I'm thinking about doing the same too (currently have the basic Octopre Mk II and Scarlett 18i6 - both working in good condition thankfully...) but RME also offers Fireface UC/UCX/UFX as well as the 802... Also looking at Prism Lyra 2 or Titan. So confusing as to which one offers the best...

Large Diaphragm Cardioid Condenser for Grand Piano Recording

Thanks for this John - I'll look to place an order for MKH 8020. I guess the next thing I must do is sorting out the audio interface as I guess neither my Focusrite Scarlett 18i6 or Steinberg UR-22 will do justice the Sennheiser pair... I'm looking at the choice between Antelope, RME Fireface...
