I usually record my vocals dry. When i'm happy with what i've got, i use a vst plug-in to add compression.
One of my recent tracks has (excuse the newb terminology) quiet/soft vocals in the verse and some loud vocals in the chorus. I achieved this by recording the chorus first with the signal...
while we're at it, i'll offer my $0.02
Guitar first (my mother tongue), then when the song has structure i'll play with the melody by humming and mumbling whatever words come into my head until I notice a little melody that fits. I'll play with it and thresh it out until i'm relatively happy...
mastering you say... interesting.
Your correct in that I push the recording signals as high as I can get without clipping, but could you explain (for the newbie that I am) what you mean about mixing with the main busses at 0db.
I've heard people talking about this in another thread - does it...

Luckily for me I've spent some time playing drums, and im just past beginner...
What can I do to enhance the pretty raw sound I get on my vocals? Im not worried about the quality of the sound, its clean enough... but I would like to hear what effects you recommend....
I read a lot of people talking about compressing vocals, or changing the EQ... I'm a complete newcomer so...
oddly enough I played about with CWPA after writing this and managed to answer a few of my own questions....
I see now the tempo view, and though I dont understand it fully Im sure Its understandable with a little practise. The bridge in my next song should stand out now :)
Editing drum loops...
Previous to Alan's illuminating post on the use of soundfonts, I have been struggling with bitheadz voodoo program for arranging authentic sounding rock drums, and importing wavs into my cakewalk 8 project. I am delighted to hear that my sblive! value and some soundfonts can create some...
