Using a pop filter while recording acoustic guitar?

I actually had to use one the other day--heavy breathing while playing. Those small condensers are sensitive!

Rack tom sounding like a basketball.

Play with the mic position or try a different mic. I've been using a Sennheiser E604 at an angle that seems to reduce some of the tubbiness.

to direct mic or to connect 4 track to mixer

Depends on what you need. Basically you're either going to be using the preamps/EQ on the Mackie vs. those on the Tascam. If you like the tone & level you're getting direct to the Tascam, do it that way. If you need additional gain and/or want to tweak the tone on the way in, use the Mackie...

speaker or instrument cable (line level, unbalanced)

Also note that standard instrument cable (e.g., guitar cable) is not a TRS cable.

Pro Tools very slow cause of plug ins

Duplicate the tracks and then apply the effects you want as an Audiosuite plug. This will write the effect to the track you just duplicated, but you'll still have your original unprocessed track if you want to go back to it.

Poll: What Mixer Do You Use?

Soundcraft Spirit M12 into a Korg D1600; all mixing is done in Protools LE.

    Digidesign Mbox yay or nay?

I've got one and like it quite a bit. The biggest downside is that you're limited to two channels so if you need more inputs than that you have to go to an outside HD recorder or step up to the Digi 001 or 002. I do all my recording on a Korg D1600 then import the tracks to Protools as .wav...

Anyone heard anything about this stuff? Can't really find any specifics on the site but here's the link...

    Penetration problem

Caulk, caulk and more caulk. If it's air tight you're good to go. Try and make the penetrations as small as possilbe. If you're real concerned consider surface mount boxes. Then caulk around everything that could let air out with a good quality silicon (100%) caulk.

    Live Recordings

Awesome you guys and thanks for the link Daryl! It's pretty limited I know and it's just for getting those moments of genious down on tape (or 1's and 0's as it were). When we finally piece it all together and I complete my tracking room I'll try and do some real recording with everything...

    Live Recordings

Thanks you guys. I'll try the low frequency rolloff and see how it works out. I've got a 16-channel mixer that I run all the mics through. Problem is I can only track 8 channels at once, and I like the flexibility of being able to mix and eq each of the drum mics separately. Maybe if I get...

    Live Recordings

We've been recording our band rehearsals on a digital 8-track. With our setup I can get 3 mics on the drum kit. Right now I've got one on the snare, one on the kick, and an overhead. I've played around with the height/position of the overhead some, but was curious if there are any rules of...

    construction necessities

Depends on how much isolation you need. If you're more concerned about keeping noise from around your outbuilding from getting in, you're probably ok. If you want to maximize isolation of your rooms to the outside--better to go with more. I know John Sayers in his Left Bank studio design...

Zikes, You can try these two for OC 703: Southwestern Insulation, Garden Grove, 714-530-2980 CWCI, City of Industry, 626-369-4424 For your door, I was able to get a prehung solid core door at Home Depot. Check around. You can do the sealing yourself with conventional weather stripping...

    703 fiberglass or equivalent

Zikes, That stuff seems really expensive. Also, the link you had is for an MSDS sheet--no acoustical data or density information by which to compare it. It might work ok, but what you want is something with about 3.0 lbs/cu. ft. density and you should also check out the absorption...

    What is a bass-trap?

Simply put, an absorber designed to specifically trap low frequency sound waves and keep them from bouncing around your room muddying things up. They come in various shapes and sizes. Here's a couple of links for some ideas: http://www.ethanwiner.com/basstrap.html...

    baffles: where to buy

    basement studio help, please

Scott, Couple of quick thoughts. Make a drawing of your room and post it here. It will make everything easier to understand. Forget the carpet on the walls--it'll just suck out all your highs and leave you in mudville. Better to build some acoustical absorbers which you can do yourself for...
