whats the best portable recording system

Well, I'm not sure what kind of capabilities you need. But myself I use a pair of AT4053 mics, an RME QuadMic, and a Nomad Jukebox 3 when I only need two tracks. (I power the QuadMic using a Bosch Drill battery, and it runs for about six hours.) If I need more tracks I bring a laptop, an RME...

gear to warm up my digital recordings?

After listening to "So long farewell" on my computer speakers at work, my guess is that your recording room is too dead, you are not placing your microphones properly and you are letting the guitar player have far too much influence on the mixing. :D Just my 2 öre (swedish).

How Many Guitars do you own

-Fender Precision 1978 with TI Jazz flats -Six string Pedulla Thunder Bass -Aria Pro II with 0.35 Elites and ridiculously low action for thumb playing -Fretless Ibanez (which is so heavy that I'm reluctant to play it) and a -3/4 scale double bass.

    Bass Effects

Well, my favorite pedals are the EBS Octabass and EBS BassIQ, the former is of course an octaver (an amazingly well tracking one at that) and the latter is an envelope pedal. Both are entirely analog, built like bunkers, and the sound is second to none. Admittedly I use them very sparingly, but...

Enough of this low-end crap--what are good mid-priced mics?

A pair of AT4053 would serve you well in the overhead/guitar department.

    Best external hard drive?

You have configuration or hardware issues. Firewire is not the limiting factor here.

    Audio Technica AT4053A

I have the 4053, and I like it! But I can't be much more specific than that, because I havn't had the chance to use it much. (I'm in the middle of a complete rebuild of my recording room.) From the little experience I have with it, I would anyway say that it is the nicest and most natural...

    notebook opinions

I still say go with the mac. I have been doing battle with a Dell laptop (that looks great on paper) for two years and have hated every minute of it. MHz is nothing, quality is everything.

What OHs won't make the cymbals too thin??

Well, this problem is not entirely unheard of, and I guess the best way to deal with it is to have darker sounding cymbals for recording. Not a very practical solution for most people though...

Members average number of mics and a list...

jnorman, those are some nice mics you've got there! And since you have the one AT capsule I don't have I'm curious how you think it compares to the other small capacitor mics...

    ECM8000 Mods

This must surely be one of the best threads in here ever! But I still think my own ECM8000-mod is by far the best bang for the buck: I have shrunk black plastic on to the mic bodies, so now they look like DPAs! :D

    km183 good omnis?

I don't exactly understand what DJL is saying there, but I guess what he means is that small diaphragm mics have a better off-axis response be cause the diaphragm is small compared to the wavelength of the sound wave over a bigger portion of the audible frequency range.

    km183 good omnis?

While we are throwing sdc omni suggestions at each other, I suggest a look at the AT4049. Cheaper than any of the mics mentioned, and still really good. (I havn't compared so I cannot say "as good".) And of course there is the possibility to add cardioid and super-cardioid capsules later.

Members average number of mics and a list...

    Oh, well, my list has changed somewhat too; perhaps it's time for an update: (2) Audio-Technica AT4053 (2) Audio-Technica AT4049 (only capsules) (2) Behringer ECM8000 (2) Beyer MCE80 (1) Beyer M88 (1) Beyer M69 (1) Beyer M201 (2) Line Audio CM2 (2) Sennheiser MD431 (1) Sennheiser MD419 (1)...

    Where's the NULL

For a handheld cardioid mic, the null line is the extension of the mic shaft. Lots of handheld mics are super or hyper cardioids though, and for those the null is a cone with the shaft in the middle. (And don't let the look of the MD421 fool you...:))

Multi-Pattern Mics - Use them much?

I only have one multipattern (the Milab VIP50) and use the different patterns all the time. Besides MS - which I don't really like that much - a fig 8 can come in really handy for a lot of things where you want separation. For singing guitar players you can for instance place the mic so the...

    Acoustic # 1 - I Wonder Why This Is?

Great stuff! Though for me the stereo image is a little wide, or perhaps has too little in the middle to glue it together. I'm not a big fan of the piano either, a bit naive and not very musical to me (then again I also think Steely Dans songs are naive and unmusical). Superb vocal harmonies!

    Bruel & Kjaer 4007

It's in some ways the best small diaphragm omni mic ever made, and it's optimized for high sound pressures. Should be great for anything where you like what you hear and can get in close or the room sounds nice. Now shut up and go record something! :)

    the Mic-Pre Challenge!

I think it's fun too! But want to know which ones they are, 'cause I'm here so seldom that there is no way I'll remember to check it out next time. I'd find it very interesting if I liked the "wrong" one... :)
