Hey, all. Through a roundabout set of circumstances, I'm finding myself wanting to connect my Mackie Onyx 1220i to a laptop that has no Firewire ports, nor an Expresscard slot to add one. But it does have USB3.
There seem to be a number of USB3-to-FW adapters out there (ex: Firewire IEEE 1394...
Or maybe this - punch just the FireWire button in the CR matrix, patch the CR outs into a couple of unused channels, attach the monitors to the main outs, and feed the headphone amp through either an aux bus or by tapping the main inserts. More complicated, but gets me the playback an overdub...
Hey Treeline - thanks for the input. It's a question of spousal-approved budget, so you could call that "ability". :)
One question, specifically about the 1640. How do you route signals for overdubs? From reading over the manual, the only way that I can figure out how to listen to...
I'm looking into investing into one of these. From what I can tell, the big difference between them is that the 1640i can send 16 discrete tracks back to the channel strips, instead of just a stereo return like the 1640.
I mix 100% in the box, so that feature doesn't matter to me, and I can...
You know this unit - 24/96, 8x8 analog + S/PDIF, word clock, 1x1 MIDI, ZLM, etc.. I've also got an extra rackmount converter unit for it, which could be used to add 8 more analog channels if you can lay hands on another PCI card (they come up on eBay from time to time).
Functionally perfect...
One other option is to pick up a Lexicon MPX-100 or MPX-110. This is a reverb unit that runs about $100 used, and includes a S/PDIF output. If you use the L/R inputs as your new line-level inputs, set the mix control to 100% dry, and hit the bypass button, it will ADC those inputs and output...
Hey all - it's been a while. Just took my studio gear out of mothballs, a year after I moved houses. I'm putting together a very limited setup for the time being - a stereo instrument setup (mostly for acoustic guitar) and a vocal setup.
I have a vocal setup that I'm happy with - VTB-1 +...

Nah, you don't need a scope. In fact, there are those that feel that "visually biasing" using a scope and tone generator tends to overbias an amp, shortening tube life.
For an excellent overview of rebiasing by the hobbyist, check out http://www.duncanamps.com/technical/lvbias.html -- this...
I'm working on a jazzy tune with a very spare arrangement (fingerpicked electric guitar, fretless bass, and vocals) and have been unsatisfied with any of the panning schemes I've tried.
If I pan everything center, it seems flat, since the only stereo information comes from the verb, which I've...
MT-2 Metal Zone distortion pedal. Three-band semiparametric EQ, monster heavy tone, etc. Cosmetically in decent shape, some minor wear, works fine. Sells new for $90, asking $30.
Something in my home environment makes my DMP3 hum when I plug in two condensors and turn on phantom power. I sent it to M-Audio, and they ran several tests and certified that there's nothing wrong with the unit. It's fine, it just doesn't want to play nice in my studio.
I have all the...
BTW, once it comes back, I'm planning to get the Rolls PB223 two-channel phantom supply to use instead of using the one in the DMP3. It's $50 at music123.com, which is cheaper than buying a new preamp, and since I only paid $120 for it, I suppose it's fair. :/
I have had this exact same problem. Two weeks ago, I shipped mine back to M-Audio, where they were unable to reproduce the problem after several tries. It's currently in transit back to me.
Quite disappointing, since I bought the thing to do stereo setups for drum overheads, acoustic guitars...
BTW, this assumes you want 8 I/O. There are other options if you can live with fewer I/O's.
If you have to also get a computer in that budget:
Delta 1010LT ($279 at MF)
Dell GX110, P3/933 ($214 at compgeeks.com)
The Delta card comes with software to get you going.
If you already have a...
I second the RS speaker selector. The four-way one is supposedly "high power" (i.e., it can handle 100 W/ch). I use it to select between my nearfields, a set of home stereo speakers, and a set of big PA mains. Very convenient, and inexpensive.
So I'm getting ready to ditch my NS10M's. I've been kept away from the studio for over a year, which means I'd have to learn them all over again; as long as I have to do that, I'd rather get something that doesn't fatigue me as much.
I'm using a Hafler P1600 amp to drive them. I can probably...
Any mixer with channel inserts should work fine for your purposes. Instead of taking the main buss outs from the mixer to your soundcard, you can plug a TS (unbalanced 1/4") cable halfway into the channel insert and tap the signal from there to your soundcard. So find a mixer with four XLR...
