Ugh... I think it's getting worse.

This might be a REALLY stupid question, but... Is there some kind of meter or analyzer that I could use to compare my audio to some other audio that I know sounds good? Or even just something to provide a visual reference so I can see what the boundries are?

Ugh... I think it's getting worse.

I have posted a few of my video covers in here for some mixing critique and I've received some excellent advice on where my mixes need work, where my equipment is lacking, etc. I'm following advice, changing things around here and there, but I still can't seem to get a good mix that is...

New Cover (Fountains of Wayne Video Song)

Awesome input! THANK YOU! Monitoring/mixing is a constant struggle for me. I'll definitely try it at a lower volume next time. I do tend to crank it up when I'm mixing.

New Cover (Fountains of Wayne Video Song)

Any suggestions on this mix? What's wrong with it? What's right with it? I'm past the point of no return with video taping my recordings. If the video is too distracting, lemme know and I'll post the mp3. Thanks!

New Recording - Reptilia (Strokes Cover)

Oh, hell. I just read some of the 'related posts'. I didn't realize this forum had so much disdain for The Strokes. Sorry, guys. Going forward, I'll keep my Strokes to myself. :)

    Blues Song - Stormy Monday

That's amazing, man. The performance is spot-on. I'm not good with terms, but it sounds a little dark to me. Like there's a frequency missing somethere that could really brighten it up.

New Recording - Reptilia (Strokes Cover)

Hey, everyone. Just finished this up yesterday. I got a lot of good feedback on the last one I posted here, so I'm throwin' this out there for ya. A little background, Darby and I kinda know each other through a mutual friend and through Facebook, but we've never really hung out. We both do...

    Lay Me Down (Video Song)

Thank ya, sir! Your grins and advice are much appreciated :D If you get a quick minute, do a youtube search for Jack Conte. His song "Gulf" in particular. If you're anything like me, you'll watch several more of his videos and learn VOLUMES on video fashion. LOL, not so much on the other kind...

    Violent Femmes Cover (Video Song)

I'm pretty sure the root cause is mic placement. The mic is kinda below my face and I'm singing across the top of it. Is that "proximity effect"? I don't know from terms.

    Lay Me Down (Video Song)

Right on. Yeah, the videos are secondary at best. I started watching this guy on Youtube, Jack Conte, who defines "Video Song" as what-u-see-is-what-u-hear and I found it intriguing. I have some background in video so I started taking video of every track and throwing them together. They're more...

    Lay Me Down (Video Song)

I forgot to touch on the bass too. I really struggle with tone when I record it, this one just happened to work to the song's advantage. It's a REALLY cheap bass and the amp I'm using is a just modified guitar amp. It's difficult to bring the thump under those circumstances.

    Lay Me Down (Video Song)

Thanks, guys. The shaker is a mini-tamborine thing that came in a First Act percussion kit. I got it for my girls for Christmas one year, but I use the stuff more than they do. The cajon really is just a wooden box with a hole in the back. I made mine out of an old dresser. The thin piece of...

    Video Songs

I use Adobe Premiere Pro. I just insert my complete audio file and then match up the waveforms from the camcorder audio of each invidivual video track. It's not always spot-on, but usually within a frame or two. To embed Youtube, just paste the last string of letters from the youtube url...

    Video Songs

Hey, all I have been recording music for a LONG time, but I've just recently jumped into the world of "video songs". In a nutshell, It's a what-you-see-is-what-you-hear approach to music videos and, for me, it's added a whole new dimension to my home recording enjoyment. I've come to grips...
