It is always possible to get more bang for your buck if you build it yourself. I just put one together for a family member for around 800 bucks that will blow the pants off of anything hp can do for that price range.

I have experience with the motu and would like to let you know that it sucks. Interface sucks, sucks with sonar, documentation is shitty.

If your DAW software supports rendering through multiple threads, that is where the 4 cores come in handy. Faster rendering. I am assuming that if you are building a beast audio pc it will handle all of your plugins just fine.

Go with a quad core i7 processor. Ram = ddr3 1600mhz drive speed = sata 3gbps 10000rpm (biggest crutch when recording) - Forget about solid state for another 3 years. always do a clean install.

This is a great writeup. This is also helpful to us who don't play drums but get stuck recording our technically challenged drummers for demos etc. Nice Job :)
