    pod x3 vs pdi-03

Has no one here who's used digital modeling also tried a speaker simulator? I guess it boils down to how good Line 6's modeling is for bass amps and vocal preamps. Surely someone can comment on that? Thanks. :D

    pod x3 vs pdi-03

I'm a one-man band trying to find the best way (aka most practical and budget friendly way) to upgrade my "studio." I'm happy with my drums, but my vox, guitar, and bass tracks are lacking. I just can't crank an amp and I'm not satisfied going direct with bass. On top of that I can't afford a...

    Which Sticks Do You Use?

The best sticks for killer rock tone are 5B's upside down. Now that's power. Just don't break your wrist. Other than that, I like 'em very short, as those are faster and more maneuverable. I go back and forth between satin and gloss finishes: satin is smoother and faster, but gloss has a...

Wrong amp? Suggestions for next step up...

Peavey and Carvin are the only two brands I know of that make cheap tube amps ($800-$1500)that will last the long haul and do everything they are supposed to do. Or you could just go with a pedal like Walt-Dogg said.

Best speaker for an isolation cabinet

This is why I'm leaning more toward getting a speaker simulator: isolation cabinets seem to present just as many tonal problems as they solve (from what I've read). And add to that the increased risk of ruining the speaker and a speaker simulator seems to be the better choice imo.

If You could only have one mic which of the following would it be?

    Why isn't sm58 an option? :)

Best speaker for an isolation cabinet

I was concerned mostly with the speakers dying due to the lack of air flow, not what speaker would sound good for what I was playing. But I think I'm going to get a Palmer speaker simulator instead of an isolation cabinet.

    Under-rated brand

Cort is one of the better Korean brands, although I'd say Samick is about the same as far as quality is concerned. I have a Cort bass that is excellently constructed and very comfortable to play, but the pickups are pretty crappy. I paid about $250 for it. I'm not complaining for the money.

some drum setup questions - a survey, sort of

    1) not even close to level 2) probably 3-4 inches 3) I keep my hi hat as high as I can while still playing comfortably, so I'd say that there's probably around a foot of distance. 4) I really don't know the answer to this one, and since my drums are in another country right now I can't check...

    computer capabilities and new interface/mixer

Truth be told, for all that FireWire is hyped up to be it has left me frustrated more often than not while USB products, even the cheapo ones running on USB 1.0 have run flawlessly. Go figure? But I'm not necessarily against USB 2.0, and it should be fine so long as I unplug all other USB...

    computer capabilities and new interface/mixer

I'm a bit leery of budget solutions, as I've had the displeasure of using cheap firewire boards in the past and they usually ended up choking on the tracks or at least not working very well. Don't get me wrong, if $400 will get me a great firewire interface or mixer with at least 8 channels...

    Do looks matter?

I always mock my friends who need a guitar to be pretty in order to buy it, but I'm just as hung up on looks as they are, the only difference is that I want a guitar that looks crazy as opposed to pretty. In fact, I was going to order a guitar from a certain company, but I just couldn't wrap my...

    Tuning pegs

2 to 3? I've got it down to no more than 1 to 1 1/2 windings per post. Maybe this has more to do with the fact that I like one piece bolt-on necks, which would experience more fluctuation as opposed to a laminate neck, especially if it's a neck-thru guitar.

    Tuning pegs

Tuners don't slip, period. But, too many windings can cause the strings to go out of tune. I have no idea if physics agrees with that or not, but I know from experience that the less windings I have around the tunings posts, the more in tune the guitar stays. I have no idea why that is.

    computer capabilities and new interface/mixer

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm not the most computer savvy guy... Anyway... In considering how to to spend my $2,000 gear budget once I get back to the States, the thought occurred to me that upgrading my interface would probably be the largest improvement I could make...

Who went to school for recording? Who hometaught themselves?

After diving head first into home recording, I thought that taking some classes on it would help a lot. I signed up for a class at the nearest community college. Actually, I didn't take it for a grade, I just audited it (cost about $35). And boy, am I glad I didn't take it for a grade...

    Tuning pegs

Make sure the tuners you buy will fit the tuner holes. And also, even cheap tuners will hold a guitar in tune well enough. If you are changing them because you think they are the culprit in a guitar that always seems to go out of tune, it is much more likely that the bridge and/or nut is the...

Are vocals the most important part of a song?

All I have to say regarding this is: I don't like music that treats the vocals as the most important thing. Vocals are just part of the big picture as far as I'm concerned and shouldn't be in the spotlight any more than any of the other instruments.

    Novice question---better sounding snare

Frequency limiting. And I agree with what Greg L said: unless you can hear annoying ringing when everything else is mixed in, don't worry about it. What I want to know is, why is everyone so against ringing snare drums? I like hearing the snare drum ringing in the mix. Dry snare drums sound...
