A Punk Looks at 40 - Greg's birthday song to himself!

The title drew me in here...I thought you were going to punk up the Jimmy Buffett tune. :) Your production skills are damn good, old man. Did you buy yourself any new gear on your birthday?

    What's the story with Epiphone?

Definitely. My Epi Dot is (I believe) laminated maple compressed wood with lesser quality metals than the Gibsons. With more expensive guitars I can definitely tell the difference in quality, and I doubt an Epi LP is going to come close to my LP Std in quality of materials. But I play that...

    Pedal Question

Yes. And generally speaking, I try to avoid DOD OD pedals. I've tried a number of them through the years (and owned a couple) and they just don't sound good to me. The circuitry sounds like it breaks up electronically in a way that it's not supposed to, like the insides are baking in an oven...

    Pedal Question

If I were to describe it, I'd call a tubescreamer a balls-in-your-face-rock-and-fucking-roll pedal. It has that mid boost tone that is one of the best I've heard, especially if your fronting into a naturally overdriven tube channel. From a straight up clean channel, it sounds great but lacks...

    Condenser or dynamic mic?

    Pedal Question

+1 here for the Tube Screamer. Greg, great tone on that clip.

TC Electronic M300, Alesis MidiVerb 4, both or neither??

Also, if you're in the sub-$200 price range, don't leave out the Lexicon LXP-15. It's a good multi-effects unit from the '90s and can be bought on ebay, much (subjectively) better than the Alesis and TC units you are looking at.

    Condenser or dynamic mic?

For acoustic guitar and the kind of vocals that I imagine will accompany it (non-screaming type) I would guess a condenser is the way to go. MXL v67 is a good budget condenser, and I don't agree that you can't record good tracks with inexpensive mics.

TC Electronic M300, Alesis MidiVerb 4, both or neither??

Midiverb IV was the first multi-effects unit I bought for my home recording project. I still have it, and it sits nicely in the company of a Lexicon PCM90 and PCM70. I still think it is a great sounding unit. I've never owned an M300 or M350, so to be fair I cannot comment on how that holds up.

    What's the story with Epiphone?

I agree. I've owned the Epi Dot as my "beater" guitar for about a year and a half now. I was going to replace the stock pups, but I adjusted the overall heights and then tweaked the pole pieces and am fine with them now. If you watch a few seconds of this clip, it is the stock Epi through an...

    Taylor acoustics

I've had a 414ce since 2004 and it is a great guitar. I played acoustic guitars for about a month on the weekends, narrowing down my top five and what I was going to spend. The Taylor won, obviously. Great sounding instrument.

Does anybody use or used to use Groove Tubes Model One mics?

Actually, there were a few minor parts in the power supply that needed to be replaced, so I took it to Hayden at Florida Electronics. It is a nice mic, handles high SPLs really well, and has a really cool vibe to it.

    Are real drummers "extinct?"

EZ Willis posted this at A+A and I thought it was somewhat relevant to this thread, especially the "how do we keep the human factor in recording" question that the narrator poses. It is a film by Dave Grohl, and one that I'm excited to see. Sound City Official Trailer - YouTube

Does anybody use or used to use Groove Tubes Model One mics?

I fixed the elastic suspension and my soldering expert amp/electronics tech re-soldered the loose wire to the capsule's connection point and the mic is up and running. I have only had a chance to say "check, testing, sibilance" into it because it is a 'working weekend' for me, but I look...

Does anybody use or used to use Groove Tubes Model One mics?

Except when what's inside the box is broken. :( The box wasn't damaged at all, but must've been dropped pretty hard because it broke one side of the elastic suspension mount holding the capsule causing the wire to the capsule to break from its solder. I held the wire to the capsule and it...

What exactly is wrong with Behringer brand mixers?

    Absolutely. ^ ^ ^

    My strings ...

:) It's a great sounding and playing guitar, it just looks dated as hell. Image still has a lot to do with things so it doesn't get much action from me these days, certainly not in the church band I play with.
