Upgrading to a 'beginners home studio' from an iPad + garageband

Right, I think that I’ve come to the end of the road …. When it comes to continuing the way that I have been previously. It’s time to hang up the iPad + Garageband, and my Apogee Mic I’m not doing it to enable me to give up my job and make stacks of cash selling music, I’m doing it as...

    I'm still having fun :)

Thanks for taking the time to listen - I don't really get much opertunity to receive feedback. I think that if I grabbed a pick, and scraped it up and down my low E string the Mrs would just say "Yeah, that sounds lovely." Bless her I think that I may work on it a bit more if I find the time...

    I'm still having fun :)

I'm still here, and I'm still banging out sub-standard tunes :listeningmusic: Thought that I'd share my latest - the Mrs went out to a Christmas party on Saturday night, so I obviously took the opportunity to pick the guitar up, sink some beers, have some creative smokes, and see what evolved...

    Compression pedal and Les Paul

Morning all, Was just wondering what the general consensus is regarding the use of a compression pedal and a Les Paul. I'm reading lots of mixed opinions My pedal chain currently is Guitar (Les Paul Traditional) - Ibanez Tube Screamer - MXR Phase 90 - Boss Chorus CH1 - Boss Delay DD3 - Boss...

My attempt at writing a song

Thanks, it's always good to know that someone else likes it. Thanks for the comments - I acutally don't take it as a negative at all :thumbs up: You saying that it's simplistically repetitive is wierdly EXACTLY what I was going for. I've been listening to a lot of 90's indie music (Happy...

Sorry, another how can I improve thread.

 Was happily messing around with my guitar last night - and something weird happened. A 'song' started to unfold right in front of me. First came a little 'hook', then the chords, then a baseline quickly followed. I started to panic like a 16 year old lad who was imminently going to...

Sorry, another how can I improve thread.

Quick update: It's been a few months since I posted here last. Since then, I've moved house, and changed the downstairs office into a ........ music room. I wouldn't push it as far as to call it a 'studio' - but it has my 5 guitars (my Gibson J45 and Gibson Les Paul Traditional being my...

Sorry, another how can I improve thread.

Well, I did another song yesterday. I really wanted to try and take on-board the comments that people have given me, so I worked my way through this thread and eventually landed with this: https://soundcloud.com/tim-summers/suck-it-and-see-alex-turner It's a very simple song, in quite a low...

I’m struggling with my new Les Paul

I’m struggling with my new Les Paul, and I’m thinking that I’ll have to pretty much go back to basics and re-learn :( At the end of the day I’m an acoustic player – a strummer – a chord progressionist. Always have been (for the past 25 years). I love the chunky hearty tones and warm feel of...

Gibson rolling back prices and features for 2016

Thanks, and even if I do say so myself, I do have to agree with you, it's a humdinger of a good looking guitar. I've just nipped into town and picked up a VOX AC15 Valve Reactor Amp. Even though I already have a practice amp at home (pretty standard acoustic one that I occasionally use with my...

Gibson rolling back prices and features for 2016

Correct - this does have the wide plank neck. Like I said though, this is exactly what I wanted as playing the thinner neck I kept slipping off the side. It's only a few mm's but personally it makes all the difference.

Gibson rolling back prices and features for 2016

Hi, I don't usually view this specific area of the forum so I'm finding some really intersting things to read on this Monday morning - but I thought that I would post on this thread, as I bought a Les Paul Traditional on Saturday, and I've not been able to put it down since. I went to the...

Sorry, another how can I improve thread.

Quick update: We're moving house :thumbs up: The Mrs says that if I make the double garage into a gym for her, then I can have the 'study' as my music room. No more waiting for the ultra rare moment that the house is quiet, spending 1/2 hour getting everything ready in order to record...

    The greatest song

This song could possibly be one of the greatest ever. I so wish that I could come up with something like this, rather than straining my brain with love songs, and deep meaningfull versus. No need for interesting and leading melodies, this is almost perfection...

Sorry, another how can I improve thread.

Not posted on this forum for a while - doesn't mean that I've not been reading, or have put down my guitar. What I have found positive for me is setting myself exactly 1 hour to learn, record, and do everything on a song to completion. This may seem a strange strategy for some, but personally...

Sorry, another how can I improve thread.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll definately take it on board. I know that I'm never going to make a singer or anything, but I'm doing it for fun, but that's never an excuse not to improve or at least try and be better. However, moving onto:

Sorry, another how can I improve thread.

Me again - so I bought myself a mic - a Shure SM58, seems to be one of the most widely used, so I went with the masses. Without all the fancy sound boards etc, I found that my usual timid quiet singing (to make sure that no-one actually hears me outside of the 4 walls) didn't really do it. So...

    Double tracking vocals

ok, I put some new strings on my guitar, so decided to test them out with a song - but this time, try out with double tracking some vocals. As hard as I found it to get them the same every time, I think that I achieved 95% accuracy :)...

    Guitar picks, whaddya use???

Feel for you 'Mr Clean' - horrible experience :( I lost my mum suddenly in March last year (couple of weeks till the dreaded 1 year anniversiary), then 6 months later, in October 2014,the old man went as well. Both only in their 60's. Makes you think, and re-evaluate things that's for sure...
