    Post Your Analog Recordings Here...

https://dougtheeagle.com/stuff/be_a_dragon-take1-1644.mp3 A song about a very confused dragon hunter. This was recorded on an Otari MX-80, with the vocals, bass, guitar and transistor organ tracked on the TSR-8 and dubbed over to the 24-track afterwards. The string machine was the new Solina...

Using Roland SBX-80 Sync Box/SMPTE with MIDI sequencers and my MS-16 Recorder

Ah, right. I was thinking in terms of SMPTE striping. Fair enough.

Tascam ATR 60 8 - Is it worth it? Help with functionality, please

That's actually one reason I do the complex stuff on the TSR-8, because I have more parts for 1/2" 8-track machines so by doing this I can minimize the wear on the expensive deck. And yes, moving to 1" was a bit of a stretch at the time, the later upgrade to 2" was only really possible by...

Tascam ATR 60 8 - Is it worth it? Help with functionality, please

Keep in mind that sync makes mixdown a hassle. It may take 5-10 seconds for them to lock together. Recording is easier because you can dub over a guide track on the second deck and use that to record the additional parts without both of them running (at least, until you want to record over the...

    Tascam 388 - New issue?

Apparently the 4066 maximum temperature is 125 degrees C, at least for one manufacturer, but that kind of temperature doesn't sound at all right to me, not for a signal switching chip.

    DBX problem on Tascam MS16

Thanks, that MS16 schematic is the most useful one as it includes the DBX schematics. From that, I can see that the switching is done inside the DBX unit, and that the two SIP ICs as seen on the ebay board are in fact the VCAs used for the DBX process. I had hoped those were resistor packs or...

    DBX problem on Tascam MS16

I can't find the schematics for the DS-8DX, but it seems to use cards for pairs of channels. So you can try swapping the card to a neighbour and see if the problem moves too. There is one such card on ebay but it does only seem to have a 5218p op-amp and a couple of single inline components...

Using Roland SBX-80 Sync Box/SMPTE with MIDI sequencers and my MS-16 Recorder

If it helps, I have been using a similar workflow to this since 2004. Sequence most of the song on computer first, and then lay it down to tape track by track, using the synchronizer (a Phil Rees TS-1) to tell the sequencer whereabouts in the song the tape is. This works very well and was the...

Teac 2300sx heads, how do they look?

If it's possible to get shots from different angles that would help determine whether the suspect parts are reflections or damage.

Teac 2300sx heads, how do they look?

It's always difficult to tell from a photo. But from that I can make out, they seem okay - assuming the gouge in the middle head is a reflection of the tape guide post, and not actual damage. They are a bit flat and would benefit from relapping but they should have some life left in them as...

    Post Your Analog Recordings Here...

I had a lot of fun with this. Vocals and bass were tracked on the TSR-8, and for the transferred to the MX-80 for the final mixdown. The 'crowd' effect at the end had some of the voices recorded with varispeed to give more variety. I ended up using 5 tracks on the TSR-8 just for the voices...

    Tascam 58 Question

This has been an interesting thread - I always assumed the "OB" designation meant "Outside Broadcast", i.e. it was intended for use in a mobile recording van or something.

    Demagnetising... is it really needed.

Yes, I can't honestly say I remember hearing about demagnetising video decks. With DCC the heads supposedly have two designs, the digital ones being coils that can't be magnetised, as you point out. The analogue heads are conventional, but can't really be demagnetised as doing so is liable to...

    Demagnetising... is it really needed.

ADAT machines are basically off-the-shelf S-VHS decks, so a demagnetiser that works on a VHS machine should presumably work on an ADAT machine. AFAIK all they did was add new encoding/decoding circuitry on top of the video processing system. Though I must admit, I have no clue how you'd allow...

    Post Your Analog Recordings Here...

Thanks! Full disclosure, most of the instruments were sequenced on computer, with the timecode track on tape to keep them locked together during tracking. The bass was tracked on the TSR-8 because it has auto punch-in which is useful for fixing my mistakes, and the key-mashing on the Hammond...

    Post Your Analog Recordings Here...

People who were there may snigger, but I have long this weird fixation with 1973 like it was some kind of utopian golden age that I unfortunately missed. So I wrote a song about that. https://dougtheeagle.com/stuff/1973_take1-1644.mp3 Tracking was done on an Otari MX80 24-track, with the...
