Tascam 44 reel to reel RANDOM PART.... Can anyone help figure this out?

As JamesPerrett says, that's almost certainly a tape presence sensor. You'll see a similar device on the Studer A807 and even the Revox B77. The added-on look is very strange, though.

Help Needed With MIDI Sync Using MTS-30

The transmit and receive channels are for communicating with an external sequencer or controller via MIDI. They won't affect sync, and they are usually set to the same channel. The idea is that you can attach two synths to the same MIDI port, either using a splitter or the THRU port to...

Help Needed With MIDI Sync Using MTS-30

Yeah, again, if it were me, I'd try to get full-song sync to work first and then worry about trying something more exotic afterwards. Looking at the manual. It can either accept SPP via MIDI, or FSK input via the 8-pin cassette interface. Either mode would work, though obviously you'd need...

Help Needed With MIDI Sync Using MTS-30

I don't know, but that makes sense given that everything I've ever seen about tape sync is about synchronising the linear position of the song rather than providing just a clock pulse or something to lock to. I would try that - make a short song with a couple of patterns and see if the sync...

Help Needed With MIDI Sync Using MTS-30

Apparently the RX8 has three sync modes - internal, MIDI and FSK. It should respond to SPP messages over MIDI, but it might be necessary to set it to use MIDI sync first as it might ignore everything else if it's set to internal sync. EDIT: It's worth mentioning that there are several...

Techno-Archeology: TimeLine Product Documentation and Upkeep

Yes, they're all linked at the start of the thread, around page 3. I would be interested to know the build dates on yours, since they might not be the same. Most of mine are from '89 by the looks.

Techno-Archeology: TimeLine Product Documentation and Upkeep

It just so happened that 500-series EPROMs were in a box and had the revision code written on them. If they were still in the machine, or didn't have the code written on them by whoever burned them before me, I'd have had no idea. Fortunately I have the MX80 EPROMs in the same box at the...

    Tascam 48, impossible to record

Definitely clean that lot off. It takes surprisingly little gunk for the recording level to drop off. Hopefully that'll sort it!

    Tascam 388 - Track 7 & 8 not recording

The 'not recording but does play' thing can be due to the relays sticking on the channel card. Swapping cards and having the fault move would tend to indicate that. Audio routing issues can sometimes be caused by a hex inverter chip failing (U104?), this seems to be a common fault on the 388...

Techno-Archeology: TimeLine Product Documentation and Upkeep

Most of the songs are composed in a sequencer and dumped to tape using a Phil Rees TS-1 synchronizer. That stuff goes directly to the 24-track. Things which require lots of punch-ins and retakes like bass, vocals and more complex tape effects such as reverse reverb, reverse drums, tape loops...

CODE TYPE and REF SRC go backwards and forwards through the manufacturers. The up and down buttons beneath the display allow you to select the model. As for the firmware images, I've got L410 on both units. Originally one of them had the 500 firmware, but it kept trying to start in video sync...

Techno-Archeology: TimeLine Product Documentation and Upkeep

Just checking, are you positive it doesn't have TASC-60 support? IIRC you select TASC-40 and there's a modifier button to flick between the TASCAM models, (but I can't remember what). Mine are mostly acting as timecode displays and regenerators at this point so I don't configure them much anymore.

    Tascam 388 Tk 8 issue

Ah, good! I did wonder if it might be a cold solder joint, but that would definitely do it too. Glad you're back in business!

    Tascam 388 Tk 8 issue

I think the 388 uses relays to switch what the head is doing, and these sometimes get stuck. Most of the TEAC decks from that era do this, I'd be surprised if the 388 was any different.

    Studer A807 Motor Problem

Yeah, if the starter board is fine, but one of the phases had lost a drive transistor, it would likely be operating at half-power - enough to keep it running, but not enough to start. In that scenario there would be a one-in-three chance of it trying to start on the weakened phase...

    Studer A807 Motor Problem

I think if the drive IC fails, the motor will stop spinning at all, since it's controlling the phases of the motor. I'd be inclined to suspect one of the drive transistors. Especially if this wasn't happening with the other capstan board. Interestingly, the manual shows an additional circuit...
