You can go both ways with the compression. I always used to track the drums and add compression after. Usually the dbx163x on kick and an FMR RNLA on the overhead.(2 mic set up). Just record ,then insert them in the Send/RCV of the channels being used. Lately, I have been printing compression...

The pseudo 12 string trick is cool. It's been a while since I watched it. If I remember correctly, he would record a guitar part on one track and then double that part on another track at a slightly different speed using the pitch control. Upon playback, you would get this cool chorusy sound.

Maybe a dirty headphone jack??? You could try swabbing it out with some deoxit. Even though I have a feeling that's not the problem, it's worth a try.
