Here is a tales out FFW pack.. Not perfect.

If I'm recording something and I rewind the tape back to the beginning, the pack is kinda all over the place. If I decide to finish up with tales out, and fast forward the tape, the pack is pretty good. Could it maybe be a reel table height adjustment issue???

For your drummers mix, why not just plug a pair of headphones into the second headphone jack using a long extension cable for the phones?

What are you listening to? Is it an old pre-recorded tape?

For my monitors I'm using a rca to 1/4" ts cable. RCA monitor out of the 388 to the 1/4" inputs of my monitors. Are your monitors powered?

I have one of those. It fits rack gear well. I used to put my 244 and 246 on top of it and had a patchbay mounted in there. All you would need to do is find a cheap rack mount reverb unit and a rack mount cassette deck and you're set.

Good luck with this. Hopefully this is the last hurdle and you can get this puppy back together and run some sounds through it.

It could be that you're recording the drum track on an edge track. Try recording it on track 2 or 3. Sometimes the tape will travel over the edges of the groove that is cut in the head and will cause wavering volume.
