Life Was Fine - comparison demo - Noiz-Lab mastering

soooooo much better. I checked it out, but I'd never use 7 plugs on my "master." Too much processing for me personally. Sure, I don't have the use them all, but individually, I don't hear anything better than what I'm already using. But they may turn out pretty decent after the betas. It's...

    Hypochonria

another vote for a good song. sincerely liked it. cool harmonies too. the mix is ok overall, but I didn't get a big "jump at me" type feeling. and no, I don't mean it wasn't "louderized" enough, just a general lack of boldness. regardless, good song, good mix. good vocals.

Feedback Welcome - Optical Illusion (Hard Rock/Metal Song)

agreed that the bass is really midi sounding at the start, then gets lost when everything else kicks in. Guitars sound good, though, and the 3rd version drums sound better than the others.

Life Was Fine - comparison demo - Noiz-Lab mastering

not sure what the Noiz-lab thing is since this is the first I've heard of it, but the version with it sounds worse in every way to me. Any openness just closed right up and everything sounded smushed and smaller--I know the volume's lower, but I hear the same when volume matched. Instant...

What can I do to improve this?

The other recording sounded like the whole mix was run thru a master verb so that everything sounded as tho it was in one space. Are you already doing that? If not, I'd go convolution if you try it to get that little bit of extra depth.

    New song written/perfomed/mixed by myself.

Yes, those vocs beginning at the 1 min mark are the worst part of the song for me. The bass and kick sound sort of swallowed and melded to me. But on the whole, I like the timbre of the recording, esp just the voice and guitar setions.

    Rain

For a quickie, this does sound nice. But yes, the drum fills here and there sound very awkward to me. Esp when the same ones are repeated. They lose their "fill appeal" as it doesn't sound random, more of a repeated variance. Still, nice recording.

    Romantic Nonsense

I think the vocals can come up in general. The rhythm guitars have more dominance.

Any help with what's not right with these tunes, would help!

I hear too much muddiness in the lows/low mids right off, and not enough in the highs. The guitar itself sounds perfectly fine to me, it's the general mix that's not at its best yet for me. the post above just about said it best--post one and take the suggestions for it and apply it across the...

Faint Aroma - Pygmy Beat Extended with Supercreep & Greg_L

basically good mix as has been stated, but for some reason I can't pinpoint, i still get a feeling like the whole mix is being 'held back.'

    "Stay".... trial mix no. 1

For some reason I briefly thought of Jon Anderson when I heard parts of the vocals. Since the bass is so melodic and sort of featured, I think it stand a touch more upper mids distinction.

First post, would love some criticism on my mix (all tracks recorded by me)

Strongly agree with Kindafishy. Good mix, and it's definitely not someone just getting into it. I like everything but the cymbals. Sounds more washy than "tingy." Like lacking some attack.

First post. Original song recorded with Tascam MF P01.

Bolan of the 21st century! Fun, creative tune Nem. So fun I hit 'repeat.' Sounds mostly good, but the bass guitar sounds really smothered and I can't make out to many of the lyrics.

    Problems with acoustic guitar mix

aha! knew something was "missing." someone else will have to help you with the multi-band question. I don't use multi-band anything...ever. I suppose it has it's place if you know what you're doing--I don't.

    Problems with acoustic guitar mix

I meant the whole mix. Maybe even just a bolder bass (again, nothing drastic) might help.

    Problems with acoustic guitar mix

"I'd prefer to fit the guitar around the strings rather than the other way around." My suggestion wasn't for that, it was for them to work together as well as in the mix as a whole, not to have one override the other. Just a suggestion. Judging from the sound of the acoustic, I'd either move...

    Hard Rock Bass Track

At the moment, the bass pretty much dominates, but if you're adding more later--esp guitars, I'm not so sure that will remain the case.

    Problems with acoustic guitar mix

I'd try notching the acoustic ~150Hz and add a little ~4k. A bit of boom around that low area. For the strings, maybe take a bit away from the 750-800Hz area. The sound thick there. Maybe add a bit of low shelf starting around 70 Hz for that warmth you were seeking. Seems a tad shallow down there.
