    Just an idea....

How about someone explains to me how your generic '90s hardcore punk band like The Unseen or The Casualties records and has their music mixed? As it's been said, there's plenty about the fucking Beatles. What about music like is popular today? If Rob Thomas were to record an album, what...

    Help achieving LO-FI sound

Everyone's already said it. Write beats that sound oldschool. Use analog gear (cheap analog gear!) and sample from vinyl. Or have a drummer come in and record a hi-hat, kick snare and some other misc. percussive instrument into a 4 track tape machine/usetape saturation plugins really clever...

    gettin shows

Hey OP. I'd like to say that the hardest part about getting good shows where you get paid, a crowd actually shows up, and everyone ends up happy, is promoting the damn thing and having a good relationship with the people running the place. I think it's a good idea to record some songs to show...

A Kick to sound like this...

Dude, on I think ultimatemetal's Andy Sneap forum, someone made a kick sample FROM this song. Why don't you do the same? It's all by itself you know, go ahead and cut it out and use it.

    Horror punk!

Misshapen Monsters Kids from a bit south of me. This is just a quick working mix crippled by MySpace's player, but you know. I haven't done this kind of music before.

    My new ska/punk band

Note that that's ska(influenced) (almost pop)punk! We need constructive criticism and some new friends on Myspace! give 'er a listen! Ship High In Transit We've been together since mid-august and we're playing our first show with a band that's played a few Warped dates and some of our...

    Carving Out EQ Niches

I wanted to chime in and instead of reiterating, say that another way to do it is to find frequencies that make things sound bad and then to, for the hell of it, see what their octaves up and down as far as you can go sound like boosted or cut to an extreme. Sometimes you won't notice them...

    Drum session tomorrow...

Run sends from your individual close miced drums into a bus and compress them, really hard, to get either more attack or more sustain/depth. Then apply a convolution reverb (or any reverb) to the track and mix it in until it sounds like a nice live drum sound, and then send that back into the...

    Drum session tomorrow...

lol. I'd love to. This guy and I are on bad terms anyways. I'll see if I can get him to experiment though. I'd prefer it at least a LITTLE looser.

    Drum session tomorrow...

The Firepod is pretty great, I think it's better to spend 300 bucks on one and then to dump a few hundred into treatment than to get a better quality interface. I used the M177s as cymbal mics, not necessarily overheads. I've done enough of this kind of music to realize that the close mic...

    Drum session tomorrow...

Firepod, 57 on hitom, I5s on snare and midtom, atm25 on lowtom, CAD m177s for cymbals, some Audix pencil condenser for the china, the kick is a sample from The Blue Room's free gogs he posted a looong time ago. I wish the snare wasn't cranked but it cuts through a dense mix just fine. Any...

    Drum session tomorrow...

http://www.lightningmp3.com/live/file.php?fid=9611 This was just the drummer for tomorrow's session fucking around. Everything save the kick is real. They're...Ugh...metal-something so we'll probably trigger everything using home-made samples.

New band I am working with

The bass guitar is kinda distorted because of the bass being tuned to C and being setup for e; the action made almost every fret buzz. It was a challenge to get rid of. I worked on it a bit listening louder and I think I got a handle on the guitars being too loud. I'm about to take this mix...

am I mixing / mastering at vol levels too high for critical listening?

I think first of all, since (for me at least) there is a computer next to me making whirrs, the most important thing is to get louder than the fans! Then...Monitoring loudly to start and to check overall balance later is a great idea...No, a necessity! The louder something is, the more the...

Drum Click Track Vs. No Drum Click Track question

Musicians have practiced to metronomes for hundreds of years. I believe 100% in using a click while practicing (as a band or by yourself), but NOT necessarily while performing a song. Performance is for show, practice is preparation. If you're prepared, you should be fine! It's always good...

New band I am working with

Thanks for the advice brethren; I've made a few alterations to the lower mids of the guitars and did no mainbus compression...That brought the snare up to where I had it mixed. I made the kick quieter so the other drums can breathe a little. I like this mix a lot better. I might wanna do a...

New band I am working with

Duely noted; I'm not sure how much low fundamental to take out of the guitar. It sucks recording drop tuned guitars because the guitarists ALWAYS insist on having way more bass than they need. It's easy to get around but sometimes it's hard to tell.
