I read pretty much the entire (I skipped 3 pages) thread and didn't see the way I work represented within... Felt obliged to contribute as I believe my workflow differs to many of the participants in this forum. Not many of you guys 'appear' to be much into (Hip Hop) music that isn't guitar...
I make Hip-Hop so my drums are layered. Every kick-drum is made up of several sounds... Same with my snares...
Panning on my kicks are fairly central (if panned at all) but snares are spaced out within the mix on both the left and the right. I usually have (different sounding) open and closed...
The 48 is missing a transformer that's found in the 58 which according to a review I just found makes it sound brighter than the 58 but require more gain...
Sounds like you need something like a CloudLifter or a Triton-FetHead for a nice little boost in gain!
Rokit 5's are definitely best bang for buck here in the UK too!
In fact if it weren't for the deal I got on the HS-7's I'd have walked out with the KRK's and I spent about 2 hours in the shop and listened to about 8 pairs of different monitors.
The HS-8's (and most of the 8" monitors) were out...
Not used the mic but the package is geared toward getting new recordists started... My guess would be that it's not great but not awful either...
I imagine that it'll be first on you upgrade list.
I've been using the 2i2 for about 3 years now and think it's a great little box although I'm at a...
I've got probably the most battered Washburn acoustic around, a strat style 'Frankenstein' electric (that gets very little use) and a Bass guitar made by Stagg that I picked up for 60 quid...
A mic with a multi pattern switch (cardioid/fig-8/omni) will give you a lot more options...
Not sure on the exchange rate (I'm in the UK) but I recently picked up a new SE2200mkii-mp for £169 in a sale.
If you don't mind buying used you might get a Rode NT2a (similar to the SE - probably more...
I use the 2i2 and I love it. However, I do wish I'd spent £50 more and got the 2i4 for the extra pair of outputs.
Does the Steinberg have midi ports? Not sure if you'd use them but if it does... They're there...
I'm ok with the lack of midi ports on the 2i2 only because Maschine is the main hub...

Shure SM58 (got 2 but one is in poor condition)
Sony Stereo Condenser (don't know the model off hand - takes a battery and has mini-jack lead)

Just my own experience recording (and especially mixing) in small spaces (and here in the UK, homes tend to be smaller at any rate)... Personally I've always had better luck in larger rooms... More area to treat but often a nicer sounding space, with the ability to move to different areas for...
Check out Auria (probably the best I-DAW out there) and Cubasis...
Also, read up on Audiobus.
As far as the room (your closet) goes... I'm not sure that'll work out quite as you think it will...
Thanks all... Seen it new for £100 and £200 (which will take a while longer to save) for the GAP Pre 73 which also gets very good reviews... Was originally looking at the Presonus TubePre/BlueTube's (both V2) which get good reviews in SOS but user reviews seem to be awful so have discounted...
