Not sure if it got a mention but for under 100 quid I don't think you can go wrong with a Rode M3 myself. Cheaper and better (imo) than the AKG C1000 and very usable on a variety of sources.

I much prefer hardware to software myself and my bassstation (in particular) and circuit get used a lot. NI-GuitarRig wins in my gaf. Excluding vocals; I only throw a mic at my acoustic and percussive instruments these days.

I'd look at getting a pair of Rode M3's rather than a single NT1. Great as drum overheads - great on acoustic guitars - good on cabs (with careful placement) and decent on vocals (again with careful placement). SE mics definitely worth a look too... I love my 2200mkii.

Check/replace the fuse in the plug as a first step. It could be the PSU... A decent TV/electrical repair guy may be able to repair but as its an internal PSU parts could be a bind...

I use the 1st gen 2i2 with various input sources (turntable, synths, drum machines, guitars and mic'd instruments) and the only time I've ever had a clipping problem has been through user error.

There's various techniques to avoid this when using sampled (no one uses general midi sounds these days) drums though... Most hip hop producers (as they tend to use samples a lot) will layer their drum sounds up to get a thickness and leave at least one instrument (usually hi-hats) unquantised...

IMO the Rode M3 is the best bang-for-buck small diaphragm condenser mic out there... Very cheap, very useful.

You can do what you're asking (and a shedload more) with Ableton...

All my drums are sampled or synthesised (or both) so it really depends on the track... I do tend to go for 'real' drum sounds more often though and I definitely get bored of hearing the same 808's in tracks.

You can get a used SE2200 MK1 on eBay for much less than a new SM57. I find it much more usable.
