Another +1 for the GAP PRE-73. I replaced an M-Audio Tampa with the PRE-73 and am extremely happy!! Whilst the Tampa wasn't a bad preamp I prefer the PRE-73 a lot more. The PRE-73 also has less noise than the Tampa. The PRE-73 is a real bargain!!

I'd recommend the Golden Age Projects PRE-73. I've owned the ART MPA Gold (with NOS tubes), M-Audio Tampa and DMP3. The GAP PRE-73 was easily my favorite out of these and is an exceptional bargain at $299!!!

Bootsies Density mkII is an awesome free compressor (as you are probably aware of ). Haven't compared it to a RNC but Density mkII is the best compressor I've tried free or commercial!!! Also he's releasing a channel strip very soon which will also have an onboard compressor.

There is a small hum coming from the output in general which gets louder when you pan the output towards aux. It gets significantly louder when I plug something into the aux input. All my gear is powered from the same mains socket.
