    mixing duet

It very much depends on the singers' voices, who the singers feel has the lead in each section, and who you think has the stronger voice. I find that panning one on each side works well if they are both sharing the limtelight and it keeps things simple - you can get some nice interplay between...

    ..in which bookcases go legit

I know someone who's done something similar with some of these: KALLAX Shelving unit - white - IKEA Seemed like a really good idea to me - any verdict on how effective it is? I have plans to replace the barely used sofa in my studio with a shelving/bass trapping combo.

Does Cubase have a MIDI channel selector for the Input Router?

This might shed some light: https://www.steinberg.net/forums/viewtopic.php?p=421195 I'm not sure that the input transformer is available in the Elements version of cubase, but using the dissolve part function might help.

    ADAT Audio interfaces

That's basically the conclusion I've come to - there is far more gear that will do this, but I'd be taking outputs from insert jacks as I don't have a line out for each channel. Seems quite a large compromise to use unbalanced connections. I might have to go the route of building a small form...

    ADAT Audio interfaces

That seems the way - I think it's a case of my expectations vs reality for my budget. Seems sadly that getting a Macbook with a thunderbolt adapter is actually going to be cheaper than buying a laptop+suitable interface. Meh. Maybe I'll leave it another year, the laptop I'm dumping is a mac and...

    Drum replacement ....its stupid!

I'm still not 100% sure, but I think it looks pretty likely. Given that I'v read about the band and producer struggling to get that sound I would conclude that people are using drum triggering as a shortcut. Given how electronic/dance music (with it's sampled/synthesised drums) dominates the pop...

    ADAT Audio interfaces

Absolutely - that unit is more than I'd think about paying (probably) but it's a step closer from what I was looking at - thanks! Seems like MOTU include a bit more IO flexibility than focusrite or tascam... EDIT: looks like getting what I want is going to be hard without looking at MADI or...

    ADAT Audio interfaces

Perhaps I should have said "16 channels of ADAT outputs" - 16 ADAT outs would be truly ridiculous. I have two adat outputs, but there aren't any interfaces in the lower end of the market that have two ADAT inputs. With firewire going the way of the dodo, most newer interfaces are using usb 3...

    ADAT Audio interfaces

I'm gonna be replacing my current laptop with a new one, but without a firewire port so I can't use my existing interface/mixer (no, I do not want to replace it fully because I also use it for live sound and like setting up monitoring quicly in the analogue domain). I have a variety of nice...

    Drum replacement ....its stupid!

This interview is interesting (they said there are no overdubs except percussion, "it's the same as live"), but also said they had trouble getting a full enough sound for the album. Seems to indicate that they didnt use samples, certainly the wikipedia page for the album has gone on and used...

    annual licenses

I'm slightly wary of the idea as they can stop supporting older plugins whenever they want - very much depends if they eventually give out a permanent license for end of life products. In 10+ years time who will still be using the same plugins they are now? Difficult to say.

    Drum replacement ....its stupid!

Not normally - sometimes though. I rarely have to though. Most online streaming platforms suggest related music. It's not always perfect and sometimes it does throw some utter rubbish your way, but if you never look you won't find anything. There are more ways to find music now than ever as well...

    Drum replacement ....its stupid!

If there is the same amount of good music (proportionally) now as there was 'then', how can it be worse? There is more good music being recorded and released. It's just knowing where to look that's harder, but in my opinion spending the time is worth the effort.

    Drum replacement ....its stupid!

Perhaps you're right, certainly online distribution has made things more acessible to a lot of musicians of questionable quality - it's also given exposure to loads of really good musicians who otherwise wouldnt have gotten recorded/heard. After the Beatles first got really famous there was a...

    Drum replacement ....its stupid!

And all the records from the 60/70s that were't well recorded - it did happen (reasonably often too), but for obvious reasons those records aren't being listened to by many people now.

Yamaha NS10 vertical for home recording

The NS10s I use at a local studio are horrible sounding speakers - but damn they are useful sometimes. I've always thought that the way they handle transients is seriously different to most studio monitors out there, perhaps it's a side-effect of using ultra-light paper cones for the woofer...

    Drum replacement ....its stupid!

I can dig that. Fortunately in terms of fully professional productions it seems quite limited to certain styles of music - Rock, Metal, Pop etc. The more I've gotten into music production over the years, the less I have been listening to those genres (looking back). Perhaps thats a meaningful...

    Drum replacement ....its stupid!

I listen to a lot of reggae and I used to agree - but I guess that's part of the charm of some old recordings that people spend so much time trying to mimic and I've gotten used to it. The mindset of big studios and producers at the moment seems to be 'I can do it, so I will'. There are a few...

    Drum replacement ....its stupid!

I think it's more to do with commercial pressures and control from labels/management - the idea that to be competetive an album has to sound a certain way, rather than something under the control of bands. I met a guy recently who drums in a band on Road Runner Records. They went into the studio...
