What do we think about Samson C02 ?

AFAIK, the Samson C02 is basically just a stock Chinese condenser. In my experience, those types of mics tend to be way too harsh for good drum recordings, IMO. You get sizzly cymbals and really poor stereo imaging of the kit. Save up a little more money and go with a pair of Oktava MK-012...

    Hissing problem with USB Interface

For all practical purposes, hissing is almost never caused by a ground loop, a cable, software/drivers, or anything else like that. It is almost invariably caused by cutting the input signal level and then boosting it again (poor gain staging), self noise (in condenser mics), and powering...

    Lion OS and Logic issue?

Well, if you have a lot of files, it might be because Lion has a different Spotlight metadata format than Snow Leopard (I think) and it has to rebuild the Spotlight stores (by re-indexing every file on your hard drive). This could take a few minutes or a few weeks, depending on your system. If...

    Studio Projects B1 vs C1

I tend to agree that you're not going to hear a huge difference between the Sterling and the SP mics. You might want to consider something a bit more radically different. Some suggestions, in no particular order, are the CAD M9, or a long-ribbon ribbon mic like the Nady RSM-2 (and probably a...

Maaaaaaaan. WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH THIS BLUE SCREEN?!?!?!?

Swap back in the original RAM. If that fixes the problem, send the RAM back. It's defective. If that doesn't work, swap the CPU back and reinstall the new RAM. If that fixes it, the CPU is defective. My money is on the RAM. In my experience, with the exception of predictable crashes that...

Behringer Interfaces (have you used any of these?)

No opinion on the V-Amp 3, but I've used the Pro, and for what it is, it's a pretty good piece of hardware, IMO.

    iLok Vent

I have a policy in my studio that if a product requires iLok, I'll choose a competing product, and if there's no competing product, I'll write a competing product. I would encourage you to do the same. If enough people said "hell no" when asked to use a hardware dongle, the audio software...

Any of you guys well versed in MOTU stuff?

Give MOTU a call. That's a fairly old interface, and it isn't on the compatibility list for the 424 card (though I *think* it will work). The 324 is an ancient 5v PCI card that is incompatible with any PC or motherboard built in the last decade. So unless you have a very old computer (last...

FWIW, I never did get my replacement ribbons.

    MXL 603 capsule

In that case, you might try taking the capsule apart and putting it back together again. The spacers might have shifted around in such a way that there's a partial short or something. Taking them apart is kind of a pain in the backside, but you don't really have anything to lose. My vague...

    Simplest Interface for MacBook Pro

I wouldn't. No Mac laptop except the 17" for a long time, which means the next time you upgrade, unless you go with the 17", you'll be stuck with an interface that you can no longer use.... That's kind of short-sighted.

    MXL 603 capsule

Could be a bad FET that's oscillating or a bad capsule, but before I did anything I'd check the capsule's supply voltage to make sure it isn't way off one way or the other. Measure the voltage between the center pin of the capsule mount and the body of the working mic, then measure it on the...

    USB vs XLR?

That would be pretty easy to build. Just use a DM1500E instead of a USB chip.

    12 tracks to Mac

Audacity is not really a multitrack audio app. Try Ardour or Garage Band. As for how to actually get the tracks from the device, I have no idea.

DIY Modding for MXL 2003/603s HELP

The coupling cap has the biggest impact on the sound (the tiny capacitor that sits between the capsule and the FET). By the time you get down to the power-filtering electrolytic caps, you might as well not bother. Everything between those two extremes is debatable. No opinion on the capsule.

FireStudio Project or Saffire Pro 40 or _________?

The 828MK3 has the advantage of being both FireWire and USB. That way, you can try one, and if you find it problematic on your hardware, you can switch to the other. :)

    Going Semi-Professional. Yay me!!

Ah. I missed that it was a live gig. I was assuming that they were tracking in a studio. For a live gig, I'd have probably used a stereo pair, and used the close mics only for bringing out solos and fixing balance issues.
