Buying a good condenser for the studio

I'd look for a used Mike Jolly. He upgrades all the crap components/head basket in bad mics. They sound amazing.

    Built a Guitar

Oh yeah, I should clarify: I bought a raw body and neck (with the fretboard/frets installed), so I did everything else. The pickups are goldfoil humbuckers wired for split coil. I thought playing live it would be cool to have the tonal options and some noise control. They sound amazing...I'll...

    Built a Guitar

Hey guys. I stepped away from recording for a while and built a guitar (except for the raw body and neck). Here it is: Imgur: The magic of the Internet The sunburst is hand rubbed using water dyes, and the finish is shellac (flakes mixed with everclear) since I needed safe products in my small...

"Say You're Sorry" - new VHS original

This reminds me of They Might be Giants.

    Warm Enough?

Sounds like you want a MBV type sound combined with post-rock. You're going to have to go with cleaner, sparser drums in a big room and a massive pedal board (more long delays) to get that. Need a higher-fidelity sound, too.

So Far We're So Far Away

Sounds good. My foot was moving, so the groove is solid. Some tom hits pop out of the mix...maybe a compressor on those? Vocal could use a hair more reverb to sit better. My main issue is with the composition, but I'm not sure if you want that type of feedback.

    Warm Enough?

If you can, put the cymbals on a separate track where they aren't being compressed.

Looking For Input On Demo Songs

I like the songs, too, but there is something weird going on in the vocal delivery at times. You kind of trail off and sound like you're dying or having a seizure at times. It has a Nick Drake vibe that is cool. To me these recordings are about the songs and the vibe rather than the recordings...

    Line 6

The drums are cool. Good beat and tone. The mix is too compressed/loud, though. Painful to listen to. This would be so much cooler if it had more dynamics.

Pen Penny Pen with JohnnyAmato and ibleedburgundy

Sounds great other than the bass...just a hair loud (especially during the opening when it's sparse). I'd automate that a few DB lower then bring it up. I like that it's a bit dark (really that just means well-balanced these days)...too many modern mixes are way too bright. Brightness war is...

"Say You're Sorry" - new VHS original

I think you can EQ out some low end on the vocal. It's boomy and fighting the mix a bit. Could use a hint of reverb on the vocal, too, to make it sit better.

    Warm Enough?

Turning up the bass and taming the cymbals would both go a long way.

I hear what sounds like tuning artifacts. Did you tune this?

just moved address, need help with boomy room

I haven't read this entire thread, but I lived in a really small place and concluded the best option is using good open back headphones to monitor, DI for bass, and close mic all amps. Doing this you can get really good results. Going the route of bass traps in a small apartment isn't worth it...

    Buying Cubase

I would have recommended getting it on Ebay. You can get good deals there. Cubase is the best. The only downsides are the price and the dongle sucks.
