Does this sound like it's mixed in a home-studio??

Bandcamp can be a bit of a pain in the rear end, for sure. On another note, why isn't this in the mix clinic? I think it sounds pretty good. There's a heck of a lot of stereo action happening... the acoustic is making me a bit dizzy. Anyway, I'd say it could pass for a better-than-budget studio...

Does anybody have an accurate frequency response to Beats by Dre. Headphones?

Lemme know if you do find more info on this, Fritz. I've got a set of the circumaural ones that have been collecting dust and it'd be interesting to know if my impression of them was correct.

    I just bought a Tascam US-1641

As I understand, the biggest difference between the two models (1641 & 1800) is that the x-former in the 1641 is internal, while the one for the 1800 is part of the power supply cable. Both are quality units! I own the 1800, myself.

    Funk song needs new ears

Man, this really does take forever to load! Why is that? How big is this file? After waiting three minutes and trying twice, I gave up. Maybe you should consider using soundcloud, soundclick or one of those services instead of dropbox.

So, what are you working on?

Working on: 1) a live mix of a band from Ottawa, Ontario 2) three studio mixes of my band. 3) trying to "master" the last mix of one of my band's songs. I try to get work done on two of the three every day, changing tasks after breaks so that I'm listening to different things, sounds, bands.

"Tying" levels of two instruments to one another

So I'm trying to keep the levels of two horns together. One is a tenor sax that was recorded with a clip-on condenser and the other is a trumpet thru an RE20. This means that there are times when the trumpeteer is blowing off axis and his levels change, while the sax is always blowing hard into...

My Two RE27's Sound Nothing Alike WTF??

How much? I like messing with electronics.

Using ribbons in a live context

Thanks for the tips and the link to that video, guys. I think I'll stick with the dynamics for the horns but just for fun, i think I'll throw up the ribbons over the kit alongside my overhead mics on a couple of stereo bars to see what it sounds like. Moresound, have you had much success with...

My Two RE27's Sound Nothing Alike WTF??

Good on you, Steen for calling this guy out on the wording of his ebay listing. I was just going to add to your rep but apparently I've given you too much already.

Using ribbons in a live context

Have any of you had much success using ribbon mics in a live context? I'm considering using a pair on either a sax/trumpet combo or as OH on drums for a 7-piece funk/soul band this weekend (drums, guitar, bass, 2xVocal, sax, trumpet). The room is quite large, with two hanging bins and a sub on...

If you were recording a live funk band...

Henry, you'll have to post a pic of your collection for us sometime. One day (when I win the lottery) I WILL catch up and surpass you on mic ownership! :P Good point about the different mic heights. I don't know why that didn't occur to me.

If you were recording a live funk band...

...would you ask the horns (trumpet and sax) to share a ribbon mic? I ask, because I've got to record this band called the Hornettes this weekend in Toronto and I'm just toying with ideas on how to mic them up. Most of the mics will double as reinforcement, with a few spot mics specifically for...

Opera singer looking for portable recording rig

the H4n also has onboard EQ, comp and a bunch of other effects. It can be used as an audio interface as well, if you find you require that function. It's a pretty decent device. Lately, I've been reading good things about the Tascam DR100 MkII. You may want to take a look at that one as well...

Sitting or Standing - does it affect your singing?

For me, it depends entirely on the venue I'm performing in. Some venues call for a stand up performance and some for a sit down one - it's all about the atmosphere you're trying/helping to create. When recording, I ALWAYS stand. It's much easier to control your diaphragm and pitch when standing...

    BR-600: how can I delete chat/fiddling intro's?

You've got to think of using the BR600 as if it were a real tape machine. How would you get rid of 10 seconds of chatter at the beginning of a tape? You wouldn't be able to, save taping silence over it or physically cutting the tape. You've already taped silence over it. Your other option is to...

    Strange Mic Techniques

Yeah, for sure Steen. I'll post some samples up later today. First, I'm gonna try some field recording and then later, I'll do some guitar or something.

Offering My Voice for recording your tracks if you need me

Dude, I don't think your voice is bad at all. In fact, it's got a great tone to it. I certainly wouldn't call it girly. You should just try to project a little more, imo. I mean, for example nobody would call Marvin Gaye's voice "girly" and that dude could sing three octaves! He was definitely...

    Strange Mic Techniques

I'm gonna try something (that seems strange to me) today - recording a three-point mic setup with X/Y plus one SDC in the centre. Has anybody tried anything like this before? Using my Zoom H4n's built-in mics (both in XY and ORTF) and my Shure SM94, I will try to get the capsules as close...

    Submissions for Mix This Project

A suggestion for making sure all the tracks are aligned when we're submitting for this project: Create stems from all of your raw tracks before bundling them for download. This way, pure silence is placed at the beginning and end of all tracks and they should all appear the same length, no...
