    Snare recording discussion

Most of the snare sound should actually come from the overheads. The close mic is just there to reinforce that sound, as necessary in pop recordings. Also, since the snare has such a quick attack and release, and almost no sustain, in order for it to pop out more in the mix, using compression...

    a Must-Have plugin

A myhatbroke preset would be awesome. The resentful girlfriend preset really gets my ass, i mean mix, kicking.

    2007 AES convention in NYC

From what I've heard, San Fran is a gorgeous city, and LA is the opposite. I personally hate NYC, but a lot of people like it, so I dunno. Chicago would be nice, though. I like it out there.

using my yamaha mg10/2 to control monitors

Thanks! Now I just have to get an RCA to dual mono cable for the insert jacks, since I've run out.

    ...before I sell Pro Tools.....

Open the MIDI editor and double click to add notes. No tools to select! You can change how you add notes via the preferences if you don't want to double click every time. You can select notes by right clicking and dragging, and delete them with the delete key (if i remember correctly).

Just got a Frenzel Tube Amp

Interesting. 25 watts is plenty of power for a tube amp, especially going into a multi speaker cabinet. Add an AB-Y switch and you can switch between the Marshall and Fender sounds, with only one amp! I like it! And the price is right......dammit, GAS.

EQ settings on amps for recording?

EQ matters less than how much gain you have, the volume you're playing at, the mic's placement, etc. For less mud, use less gain. If you want more bass, point the mic towards the edge of the speaker. The real tone is from the speakers and cabinet (well, your fingers most importantly). It took...

    2007 AES convention in NYC

They're hosting it in LA next year, from what I hear. That kind of sucks, LA isn't as nice as San Fran.

using my yamaha mg10/2 to control monitors

I apologize. I can't record more than 2 tracks simultaneously anyway, so 2 channels on the console would be all I need. I'm looking to send just my sound card's output to the console, where I can adjust the level, and then to the amp. By insert trick, do you mean sending, for example, the...

using my yamaha mg10/2 to control monitors

Is it possible to use this small mixer for both recording and controlling the level of my monitors? The amp I'm using has separate gain controls for the left and right channels. I'd like to use just use a single knob to control the overall level, for obvious reasons. The only problem is that I...

    ProTools Free

Heh, I used to use ProTools Free, before I knew better. Although I am now familiar with the interface so I can use it if I have to.

    Will reaper sell out?

I doubt it, Justin has it made already, he's just doing Reaper for fun basically. But who knows. Version 1.888 works fine for me, although I kind of want to try the beta...

    Question about phase reversal...

100% correct, listen to this guy. Please get out of the habit of saying "phase" reversal. It's polarity reversal, but manufacturers know that most people say phase, so rather than to confuse the majority of their customers, they purposely mis label it. On a side note, playing with polarity...

    Making Smooth Edits?

This is how to do it. I know some DAWs have a "snap to zero" function that aids in this, but it's just as easy to zoom in really far (so you can see the actual wave) and start/end the edits where the wave crosses zero. The trick is finding out which crossing is best, which is basically guess and...

    A little punk for you

It sounds like shit, in traditional punk fashion. I dig the song though. If you're gonna go direct with guitars, I'd suggest turning cab modeling off on the the POD (or whatever you're using) and using cab impulses. If you can find my most recent thread in the mixing forum, titled "poppy punk"...

    Recording Clean Tube Amps

If you have a decent room, try pulling the mic back a foot or two, and letting the room add to the sound. It gives a more relaxed feel to the track, instead of being in your face. Plus, it adds dimension to the song.

    64-bit mix engine?

Oh man, I guess I have to use this little thing called my brain every now and then. That large number would be the total number of possibilities (+ and -) that the voltage could be rounded off (quantized) to. It still takes up quite a "bit" of room. Har har har. Imagine the dynamic range though...

    64-bit mix engine?

On a side note, a 64 bit project would eat up 18446744073709551616 bits of hard drive space per sample (that's a quarter million terabytes)! Now set your sampling rate at 192kHz and you've got yourself a problem. :D

    Poppy punk

Thanks everyone! I'll give some of that a shot later today, see what I come up with.
