    above 17th fret (sustain)?

A wider vibrato could help. I can't really imagine a time you'd be up there and not not need to use it. I know it's not a permanent fix, but like everyone's said, there are a lot of factors that go into this.

    PCM... Floating PCM???

But that doesn't remove the artifacts mp3s create, which is the point I was trying to get at. Oh well, it works for you, that's what matters. :)

    PCM... Floating PCM???

what an awful realization, that files you thought were waves are actually compressed. :(

    Help!

Sometimes it takes a couple minutes for Reaper to recognize input. It happens to me every now and then. I suppose I should post over at the Reaper forums...

    Current Reaper project...

No problem. That range is critical in both kicks and toms. You shouldn't need to cut too much. If you do, really try to zero in on the specific frequency that's giving you the most trouble and use a high Q (small bandwidth in ReaEQ) to get rid of it, doing minimal damage elsewhere.

A Kick to sound like this...

The room has less of an effect on the kick than other drums, but it still plays a part. Listen here for an example of a group recorded in a terrible room. The mic was stuffed inside the kick with a good amount of dampening. http://www.myspace.com/wilfredband EDIT: Eck, how bad is it that when...

    Current Reaper project...

Try sweeping around 300Hz and cut a little bit to minimize the cardboard effect. Good tunes, not bad at all for practice recordings. Gotta love Reaper!

A Kick to sound like this...

A good drum and room. That's about it. This particular one has artificial reverb on it, from what it sounds (in addition to room reverb, obviously), and it was played fairly softly.

    bang for buck mic?

Plug the synth directly into your recording device, no need for a mic, especially in that price range.

Before You Consider an Epiphone Valve Jr, You Might Want to See THIS!!!

Damn, that sounds awesome. Won't do metal by itself, but it seems like there's more gain than the valve junior.

    Most diverse LIVE amp...

First of all, 10-15 tube watts is plenty for jams. Second, I can't give you advice because I don't have any personal experience with those kinds of amps. But I've heard tiny amps and they are a lot more powerful than you'd imagine.

    Tinnitus

Not to bring you down or anything (I'm glad the ringing is gone) but the damage is done. Luckily, you can work around it. You'll have to train your ears again, but all is not lost! It's happened to me plenty of times and I'm now afraid of taking a hearing test (among other things :o). I also use...

    Reaper vs. Pro Tools

Mr. Hanna, you make a very good point. It is also the very reason why I prefer Reaper to ProTools.

    Reaper vs. Pro Tools

I am in no way saying that there's a conspiracy or anything with ProTools. It just seems that if a company has a program that is somewhat the industry standard, then the developers should be more on top of their "game". ProTools is great, I have no objections to it. It's just not the DAW for...

    Reaper vs. Pro Tools

Not to veer off topic, but wasn't delay compensation only added fairly recently to protools? Version 6 or so? You know, many years after nearly every other DAW had it? What does that say about the developers?

    Reaper vs. Pro Tools

Pounds and dollars are very different. Units are EVERYTHING. And he did say without case, monitor, etc. His price is not off. While building your own computer has its benefits, I don't recommend it if you're not tech savvy. Tech support is the main issue here. When something goes wrong on your...

    Duncan JB for Punk Rock??

There's a ton of variations of "punk", so really, you'd have to be more specific. There's gritty garage punk, which uses far less distortion than say, recent hardcore, which is more of a metal sound. What amp are you using? Do you like the sound of it?
