    Poppy punk

I'm going to go ahead and blame the Rat pedal I was using, it tends to suck up brightness pretty quick. The strings are brand new. It's 2 guitars, panned 80% L/R, plus a third guitar every now and then with the neck pickup to accent parts. The solo/interlude is just one guitar until the second...

    Ohio - CSNY

I saw this and I thought "This is either gonna be right on, or absolute shit". Good thing it's more of the former :p. Vocals are fine, not Young, but no one is going to nail his voice. There might be a bit too much reverb on the vocals. It sounds like it was recorded in not the most ideal of...

    Poppy punk

This was basically just a test to get my mixing skills a bit better. It's a Lawrence Arms song that I recorded in a day, then mixed the next day. I haven't added vocals yet, due to a sore throat, but I was wondering what you thought about the mix thus far. I think the guitars are a little muddy...

Stuff I've been working on (Rock Inst)...

The Way Through: Nice work! I love that bass sound, and the guitar over it fits perfectly. I especially like how it goes from an almost jazzy intro to full out rock towards the end. I also enjoyed the guitar harmonies at the end there, it gave a great sense of excitement to the closure...

    My ska/rock band

Decent take on ska. The whoa-ohs need some more energy and/or more people singing it. Be careful with ska! For every good band, there's about 3 billion imitators. I should know, I'm in one of them :o. It's good you're not limiting yourself, that's what makes the best bands. Cool song, hope to...

    Power chords Distorted?

Yea, too much distortion. For power chord riffing, you just need enough distortion to break things up, anything more is overkill. Let the speakers, mic placement, and most importantly, your playing convey the heaviness.

Can't get a decent lead sound

thanks a ton metalhead, maybe I just need to get things into perspective. I think the rhythm guitars were recorded with too much gain anyway, I'll see what I can do. I've heard the same thing, treat lead guitars like a vocal. Except I'm terrible at mixing vocals, so it doesn't help me much...

What mixing desk, and what features are important?

I would certainly go for the Yamaha in this case. The preamps are clean (good thing, usually) and the overall quality of the board is built to higher standards than the Behringer. I have the smaller version of that board, the MG10/2, and it has yet to fail to impress me. I don't need anything...

Can't get a decent lead sound

In an attempt to further my recording skills (or lack thereof), I'm doing a quick (as in song length) metal mix. I figured getting a good metal sound would be the hardest thing to accomplish, due to all the processing that goes into it to make it "brutal". I've got what I think is a nice fat...

    Direct In Recording

The V-Amp is supposed to sound better than the pod with impulses, at least from what I've heard. I use neither, just my Rat into the board or my Zoom multi effects pedal for heavier tracks.

    Direct In Recording

A pod or v-amp works great if you turn off the speaker modeling in the unit and use convolution reverb. Do some research on that, and you'll find it to be quite the savior. Plus, it sounds nice!

    ATTN: Reader Grabbing Title

Damn, that sounds good, both production wise and song wise. It is rather busy. What might be nice is some contrast to make the busy parts sound busier. All-in-all, good work.

So you got it set up, why?

    Rap Vocals (Help Needed)

While there are techniques certain producers use, it's almost all dependent on the vocalist. I'd suggest getting subscriptions to some recording magazines like EQ. They always have interviews with engineers and producers who work with the big guys, and they discuss what they do, and usually give...

    Unhappy with New Les Paul

Are you letting the strings stretch a bit? Usually it takes a while for them to settle, in the meantime you have a guitar that goes out of tune quickly. And why the hell would you change the tuners on a brand new les paul?

    Virtual guitar/bass?

I'd suggest conning one of us to play the part for you. I doubt you'd get a decent sound out of a sim anyway. Sound fonts would be the way to go though, if you still want to do it that way.

    Guitar Rig 2 is uninspiring

I think you'll like guitar suite. The progression from guitar rig to amplitube added the ability to do low gain crunch decently. It still sucks the life out of your guitar though. That JCM900 plugin in guitar suite is amazing. It's very articulate and warm, lacks the crappy fuzziness associated...

    Guitar Rig 2 is uninspiring

I found guitar rig to be quite limited too. I fooled around with it for a while, thinking that maybe I was missing something, but that wasn't the case, unfortunately. Now if I want to record direct, I just plug guitar into my Rat, then into my mixer and use convolution reverb to simulate...

    Vocal Ideas/Tricks in the Mix

I usually try to get the vocals in as early as I can, and then add everything else after it. This way you're working around them, making them the focal point of the song. That is, assuming that the vocals ARE the focal point.

    Reaper vs. N-track

I'm a convert, Reaper runs so much faster than any other audio app i've ever used. If only it had advanced MIDI capabilities.
