Fully fixable. You might want to change the drive belt in the unit for starters also.

You may be experiencing problems with the drive motor control board. Does it appear to speed up the cassette play at all? You can find long Qtips to clean the heads.

Those rubber washers do degrade on the brake and the capstan solenoids. I find tons of black goop inside the solenoids when I break down units. I clean everything with isopropyl alcohol. You may want to remove all the rotating parts on the top, clean well w/alcohol, and relube. That lube ages...

Tape counter belt may be bad and that could shut down the spin on this motor. Don't trust those tires as good. Replace them while you have it open.

If you need idler tires then you will need belts as well. Best to replace while you are in there.

DX-4D's do work with the 22-4. The multi-pin connector is included on the machine. Modded DX-4D units are better. Ben does not have a DBX so that's a moot point now.
