    My Frist "Real" Recording

Hey man, thanks for sharing this and welcome to audio engineering! While the mix needs some real work, you've got great, tight performances to start with, which will make your mixing job much, much easier. Initial thoughts: -Guitar is way too loud, for starters. Listen to Gecko's advice about...

"When Your Heart" - adult contemporary

I'd be honored. Yeah man, if you want the brown sound, my group's second EP "Piece of Mind" is where it's at. 80s throwback, heavily Van Halen and Extreme inspired all the way.

1989 - new song, NO, not Taylor Swift!

Hey man, thanks for sharing your work and it's great to have funny pieces to pepper into a live set. This mix is a bit of a mess though. Here are just a few of my thoughts: -Vocals have very inconsistent dynamics, and rather dull sounding. They could use a good compressor combined with some...

"When Your Heart" - adult contemporary

So here's where we're at. Chorus harmonies help the song tremendously. We're trying a subtle rock piano in the very final chorus to bring it home, but debating it.

"When Your Heart" - adult contemporary

We've come to the conclusion that we don't like the lead guitars in the very end. We like the guitars doing their thing, but they get in the way of the great bass run, and the ear is getting pulled in too many different directions. So we're either going to get rid of those guitars or try...

    Piano song + vocal..

Can you post a recording of your voice that you don't like, that you think sounds thin? And we can let you know.

Drum buss processing: two different approaches

Definitely mix the drums first, and apply individual track processing (snare, kick, etc) before bussing them all together. I find myself using a drum bus virtually every time, however. Sometimes subtly for glue, sometimes hard for parallel squashing. If you know that the end result of mastering...

Merry Christmas from the Greg_L family - another two-fer! 2014 edition!

I can't wait to have kids, for this reason precisely. Awesome man. BTW the guitar and bass tones were killer on "Twelve Days" (and obviously the drums sounded great). Thanks for this!

    New acoustic singer/songwriter feedback

Okay guys, thanks for all your kind remarks and feedback. Here's one more updated version: -Rhythm guitars backed off in heavy sections to give vocals more room -Extra drive added to rhythm guitars in the heaviest section for impact -Saturation backed off on lead vocal to eliminate "sounds like...

    New acoustic singer/songwriter feedback

Rob - thanks for your comments. There's no AutoTune on the vocals. In fact I've never used AutoTune, so what is it that you're hearing? UPDATE: I had the project file open as I was reading this comment, and I think it was too much gain on the saturation plugin. Dialed it back a bit and I think...

"When Your Heart" - adult contemporary

Having taken many of the comments from my respected peers in this thread, and some of our own considerations and creative interests into account, here is the final version of the song. -Overdrive rhythm guitars came down in the chorus, and the voice came up -Simple harmonies added to specific...

    How to get more oomff

Didn't realize there was even a track to listen to. I was responding as if it was a general question. My bad!

"When Your Heart" - adult contemporary

Thanks again for your comments. In this case, we may just have a disagreement (and there's also a disagreement among members - such is the nature of music). You're the first and only person to say the bass is boomy, as others have complimented it as being full and tight. The hi hats in the...

Getting it right on the first take

Depends on how you're recording. If you're a band heading into the studio and paying by the hour, you should be so well rehearsed that you can do it on the first if not second take. When I'm recording myself or my band in my own studio, we typically use the recording process to creatively...

    Vocal Recording/Mixing Advice

Yeah, so these vocals are pretty squashed, which is great in pop and lots of rock music. But this is a sparse song that would benefit from some of the natural dynamics. The tone of the vocal track is pretty flat and uninteresting. Is your EQ in between the first and second compressors? You've...

    How to get more oomff

If you're not mastering, it will not be as loud as commercial tracks, period. By today's standards it could be as much as 8db quieter! EDIT: There's *way* more to 'loudness' than mastering, but a perfect mix still won't get commercial levels without mastering.

"When Your Heart" - adult contemporary

Armistice: Thanks for the feedback. Some of your suggestions I can try, some of them I can't, or I won't. The tracks for this song were recorded 5 months ago. This is the end of the mixing process for a full length 10 song release. So I'm not going to record new guitar licks since I don't...

"When Your Heart" - adult contemporary

Thanks guys, that's what I thought too, but had not convinced the other guys of it. I was hoping to confirm it with unbiased feedback here. Now my question is, do you think I should lower the overdrive rhythm guitars, raise the vox, or both?

"When Your Heart" - adult contemporary

Hey everyone, here's an update. We've added driving rhythmic acoustic guitars to help move the song along, adjusted the drums a bunch with Greg's help and some other considerations, like making the snare a bit more powerful, backing off some of the verb, etc. We also backed off the guitar licks...
