OK, nobody on the Analog forum answered this, so I am trying again here. It probably sounds like apples and oranges, but bear with me (and if your a girl, "bare" with me...huh..).
Here it is: would anyone like to comment on the sound quality of a TASCAM 488 (casette deck) vs 16 bit digital...
yes, yes, I think I am getting it-- the sound isn't necessarily better with TDM, it just might be much more convenient. With TDM you aren't bound by your CPU's processing ability but you gotta have the expensive external farms to support it. -- it's all about where and how the effect is...
uhh-- does anyone know how easy it would be to use an external AD converter (ie. rosetta) with Digi001/mac running ProTools LE? (just this one last question before I blow all my vacation $ on this setup and be disowned by the missus)
jk
oh yeah. My understanding is, as a general rule of thumb you should try to get your source signal (input to computer) to be as 'hot' (loud) as possible-- without causing any clipping that is, or generating any other types of input distortion (i.e. you might have a limit on how loud you can kick...
uh yeah. you don't want clipping. clipping bad.
my software has a little read "button" which tells me if I clipped. If that happens, it means there was a boo-boo and I probably need to redo the recording, or overdub that section. I might fix it by either reducing the volume on the source, or...
uhh--THANKS!
Sooo-- only Pro Tools Mix + uses TDM, and most other programs we could think about affording don't? Is this true? Does TDM mean it sounds better? For instance, if the el cheapo version of Pro Tools (LE/Digi001) doesn't use TDM does that means it's a lot worse sounding, or simply...
Here is a curious question. Well, maybe you will find it curious. How would you compare the sound quality of a TASCAM 488 Mk II to 16 bit computer-based digital (say, recorded via an Audiomedia III card onto an old Mac running 16 bit Pro Tools)?
I am sort of in a saving up phase for a good...

classified section.
They also have this really useful rating system for synths--seems like its done purely based on user feedback.

Alright, I've just had my mental-oscopy, and I'm feeling very refreshed, thank you. I think I am with you now.
All I have left to do is just bite the bullet and cough up a few sheckles to get:either:
1 g4/533x2 or 733 + Digi001 (or Motu)
-OR-
2 pc + soundcard + R.ed or Mixstream...
thanks all
gotta thank you all, and digest all this... I guess its a consensus then about my brilliant tape idea -- good God, what's happening here-- y'all actually agree on something! Oh no! Heaven Help Us! ITS AN OMEN! The Apocalypse is Surely at Hand! ...

thanks RWhite
missed your post while posting my last one-- thanks for the feedback on tape machines. I guess I just gotta think about all this stuff!
PS Doesn't Bill Gates kind of talk like Kermit the Frog, or is that just me? In a recent infomercial (countering, Im sure some of the Fed...
jaybird...
What I was thinking of doing was, after recording to tape, to do a low quality conversion at home from tape myself to my current old Mac, edit that stuff in ProTools 16 bit-- but only for the purpose of figuring out what the edits will be. I would be using PT16 like a 16 bit...
oops
Sorry, that probably should have been posted in the Analog area-- but I felt compelled to stick it here, since tape was mentioned in comparison to computer based recording systems. Guess I'll be shot.
thanks, T.J. (how's priceline?)
Before I say anything else, I just want to thank everyone for a very interesting, informative and stimulating thread. Especially camn.. you really stimulate me.
Now I'm very curious about this tape thing, and I have never used it (except as a kid-- my Dad had...
camn, you sweetheart...
Thanks for the link to RED. I checked out their site. It looks tre cool -- much more affordable than Pro Tools, or should I say, it's actually affordable!
Looks like it works on Win2k-- have you tried it yourself? Do you know anyone who does? I didn't see much on...
AlinMV:
I guess you dig MOTU.
I just spoke at length to a guy named Brad from Sweetwater who was selling me on MOTU--they don't do Pro Tools, at sweetwater, it seems.
I have two concerns about Motu: 1) audio editing 2) realtime effects. I know that Performer is tops for Midi sequencing...
AlinMV-
Thanks, thats what I figured-- the 733 is better.
Lets just talk Pro Tools, for the moment. Say, for yucs, I go straight to Mix Plus. Then does the speed of the G4 processor matter all that much-- I mean, at that point isn't the processing offloaded to the external Mix Plus unit...
camn: I have linux on my laptop. I like it.
soundprizm: I didn't mean to ignore you, its just that this issue has been beaten about quite to death (just search on 'mac')and I figure most folks here are horribly sick of this stuff (camn, don't read the following).
I will add to what RWhite...
