a close mic'd snare doesnt always sound like the snare. When you hit it you hear room ambiance. Try using two mics, or overheads to get the sound you want.

Use MDF to make the box, you could glue some drywall to the inside or double up on the MDF. Then cover the inside with a few inches of Roxul mineral wool it has a very high density and should really help. Nice seal on the door. What do you do about heat in these things?

Get an Sata drive and run it externally if you want., they make kits that fit int he PCI slot so you can send your sata ports out of the pc case.

How about drilling a bunch of like 3-4 inch holes in tube, swiss chease it up a bit then stuffing the tube with fiberglass. :)
